Dammit Parrot, Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy are still the two most popular franchises of all time in Japan. When will you realize that the amount of fan stuff on the internet does not equal overall popularity?
Man-Frog, just because I forgot to mention those two franchises doesn't mean I should have. You pretty much remind me of a hardcore gamer saying "You call yourself a gamer when you have never experienced *insert popular game here*?"

Parrot, I hate to push this further, but really, he has a point. Top *insert number* lists like this are popularity contests. So you're not going to see Touhou Project even provided as much.
There really is no accurate way to do this, since all polls of the sort depend on getting people to reply, and the only people who are going to reply are the people who are paying attention, which means the people who it applies to most, in this example gamers. Now, that RuneScape even MADE that list is completely bogus, since it's one game with currently somewhere in the 100,000's (I'm not sure on the exact number, but it's less than a million and more than 100,000) playing it GLOBALLY. And that it beat Final Fantasy just makes the list all the more hilariously lame. Congrats, Guinness (if it really was you responsible.) You managed to gather severe failure like it was failure season and the fail trees were having a bumper crop of fail.
Just because YOU'RE not interested in them doesn't add to the fact that they are the most popular series in Japan by far. Toohoo whatever isn't a big name series, and the fact that it's Japan only probably means that its not popular enough to come stateside.
The Dragon Quest series is the ALL TIME highest selling franchise in Japan by far. If this list was made for Japan it would include DQ, Final Fantasy, and Monster Hunter at the very top.
