That was always my problem. Yoshi's Island became one of my fave games, then this was hyped as the sequel - even called Yoshi's Island 64 for a while...
The game is not bad, but it still has a few problems. The controls are very floaty and the fruit-gathering mechanic (and unlikelihood of getting all Honeydew Melons) meant you could, and would, end up skipping half the level.
It also suffered by being on the N64. The first couple of years of the system, before Goldeneye 007, were plagued by short, easy games that were beaten too quickly and offered very little replay value. Yoshi's Story came out over a year after launch, and was the shortest and easiest yet...
It was targeted at younger players. Younger than I was when it came out.
