I briefly mentioned about the "たまご" (Egg) and "ひよこ" (Chick); text in this thread. In Pokémon Red and Green (and I assume Japanese Blue as well), there is unused text stored directly after the item and lift names. Since the item identifiers follow on through every 0x50 (end string character) it has been known in the English Pokémon community since a long time ago that you can force lift names as invalid glitch items, but the Japanese Pokémon community have also known that the unused text appears in glitch items following on from the lift names.
What are Egg and Chick? Well basically it's text that seems to be part of four lists (although it's impossible to tell because nothing seems to point to the text anymore), they are stored in this order:
1)Badge names (not to be confused with the final badges names which appear in the real items list)
2)Egg/Chick
3)Bronze/Silver/Gold
4)Probably Trainer classes
In order the text appears this way:
1) かみなりバッヂ (ThunderBadge - not Orange Badge)
(JizoBadge - Jizo is Japanese for the deity Ksitigarbha, which itself can be translated to Earth Treasury or Earth Womb)
(Egg)
(Chick)
(Bronze)
(Silver)
(Gold)
(Petit Captain)
(Captain)
(Petit Master)
(Master)
Thanks divingkataetheweirdo for translations and SnorlaxMonster for the "JizoBadge" translation.
The text does exist in the English versions, albeit untranslated. Since the character table for the English Generation I games is incompatible with the Red/Green character table, it appears illegible in the English games. The names begin in English Pokémon Red at offset 0x4A92 (1 byte for every character). I've added more information on Bulbapedia.
It looks like Japanese select button glitch websites have documented these names since a long time ago, but it's only since IIMarckus mentioned it in his Pokémon Red disassembly project (crediting Sawakita) and a thread on Jul requesting translation that I've found out about it.
If you're interested, there's a Japanese website with fan-artwork of glitch items based on their names. It includes fan-artwork of the above unused text, dummied out items (e.g. Coin and ?????) and unrelated glitch items. Link here.
Additionally, unrelated to the above names Missingno. was given a placeholder Pokédex entry in Pocket Monsters Blue, which says コメント 作成中 (comment to be written) and Missingno. should have been 1.0m and 10.0 kg. Pocket Monsters Blue also gave Missingno. the classification "??? Pokémon". Unfortunately, the text again wasn't translated in the English versions, corrupting Missingno.'s real height and weight, although the ??? classification remains in the localised games.
