Hey gaiz and gals, let's play a little game.
I've been playing a lot of Wind Waker lately, and as I push through it I realized that there are several accomplishments to...um...accomplish that are, sadly, not accompanied by an arbitrary numerical score to show off the fact that you've done them. This is something that Microsoft and Sony have adopted in abundance; accomplishments these feats nets you with Achievements (for the Xbox 360) and Trophies (for the PS3).
The way Achievements work - I don't have a PS3, so I don't really know the Trophy system (but if somebody who does wants to step up to bat, go for it) - is that, when you meet a predetermined requirement of some sort, you unlock the Achievement, which adds a certain number of gamerscore to a total amount accrued across all of your games. For example, in Left 4 Dead, there are Achievements tied to beating each of the four campaigns, Achievements for beating a campaign on the highest difficulty setting, Achievements for stopping the assault of the Infected in particular ways, and so on. The Achievement's scores can in turn be combined with those from other games, yielding forth one lump sum of gamerscore.
Your overall gamerscore doesn't give you anything special, really, and unlocking Achievements don't affect any in-game content. (In the form of the latter, it's the reverse; you progress through the game as you would any other, and the Achievements are a form of reward.) And, to be honest, the most Achievements and gamerscore really accomplish is granting you bragging rights. It's something to be proud of.
Nintendo hasn't taken up such a system. Granted, every once in a while there are analogues, such as that reward mode in Brawl, but the fact that the accomplishments you make there don't add up to those from other games is kind of a bummer.
As such, I started tossing around Achievement ideas for Wind Waker on Twitter (with some help with Fry and Combo), and I figured...why not spread the love? As such, I've come up with a little game for us: coming up with Achievements for Nintendo games. Also, if somebody has already made Achievements for a game you wanted to do, don't be discouraged! You can either add to the pre-existing list, or create your own.
Before we start, I'm going to lay out some ground rules:
1// Give your Achievement a name. It doesn't have to be particularly clever, though it's fun to try and figure one out
2// Give your Achievement a description. It can either be a hint, something comedic, or - at the very least - a description of what you did to unlock the Achievement. That said...
2.5// If your Achievement description doesn't say what you need to do to unlock it, just include it in parenthesis after the description.
3// Assign a gamerscore value. The value of an Achievement can be contextual; as a general point of reference, you would normally get more points for accomplishing a major story event (like beating the last boss of a game), and less points for something a bit more arbitrary (for example, drowning in Wind Waker). Alternatively, you can assign a more jokey gamerscore value to any particular Achievements (five gamerscore for collecting all of the Tingle Statues). Use your own discretion!
I'll be accumulating all of the Achievements in a single post, starting with the Wind Waker Achievements that have been pounded out thus far. Ready...go!
