With E3 '12 in the can, I thought it would be interesting to take a trip back in time to see some footage from the earliest days of E3. A YouTuber named Grooveraider has been to pretty much every E3, and he took a lot of his own video. There's a lot of footage of them on his channel (as well as other vintage gaming stuff).
Here is Nintendo showcasing the N64 at E3 1996. You'll notice that their press conference looks like an actual press conference, and not like the Academy Awards. The audience is much smaller and more reserved, rather than acting like a bunch of fanboys. And hey, it's hosted by Howard Lincoln and Peter Main!

Part 2 (with Ken Lobb!):
And just to blow your mind, from the very first E3 in 1995, here is the 3DO press conference, with Trip Hawkins trying to convince everyone that the system was successful:

That's the thing with E3... back then, video games were popupar but they weren't considered a popular alternative to other media like TV and movies... video games were seen as toys in the 1980's and 90's. That's probably why E3 of the 1990's looked more like actual press conferences than a gaming fanboy conventions. I think what changed is that the gamers of the 1980's and 90's grew up and now can travel/afford to attend E3. That's the way I see it. Great videos, though. Thanks for reminding me how excited I felt when I first saw Super Mario 64 in action.

I think I have a video about E3 2001. Dunno if any YouTube copies exist.
