Well, Sakurai seemed way out of touch when asked about it. I can see maybe some new trophies added like Melee did, but new charaters are a little less likely.
Of course, I'd Iove to eat my words.

The original text doesn't seem to directly link the Ice Climbers to the "new title future" thing. If a piece of news article presents a source, you probably should read it as well ( EDIT - better English summary here). Even that source text is a summary, so if anyone has the original full text, that'd be appreciated. They gave two reasons on the non-returning characters: (1) The Ice Climbers cannot be handled by the 3DS (in case of the other fighters, they could barelymake it work on 3DS), and (2) "also, characters/series with no possibilities/plans of future games have their priority lowered".

Well, F-Zero and Earthbound were forgone conclusions, but I guess he's also implying Metroid and DK aren't getting new entries any time soon. Now for Star Fox that makes next to no sense. They just told us that Miyamoto is working on a new Star Fox a few months ago!

"also, characters/series with no possibilities/plans of future games have their priority lowered". Isn't there a new Star Fox coming out? It's weird that they'd take Wolf out, too.

The new Star Fox is 2014 news. Smash Bros development started in 2012.
I don't think we'll ever know the true reason though. Any explanation I can think of falls apart in some way. Moves overlap? Fox's custom specials don't exactly replicate Wolf's unlike Ness's. Series sees no future? Aren't there worse candidates than Star Fox? And if we take individual characters into account, why are even Jigglypuff (now drown in the sea of other Pokémon) and Falcon (VC SNES F-ZERO can't help him, as Falcon the character doesn't show up) still there?

Obviously, the original 12 hold seniority. Aren't Jiggs and Pikachu still using the original anime voices? I'm sure Jigglypuff doesn't even show up in the anime anymore and if she did, she'd have a different voice.
Smash Bros has been erratic and unpredictable since day 1. This is why I think Sakurai should be replaced. His favoritism for Kid Icarus and Fire Emblem are too evident. Thankfully Namco convinced him to add Pac Man.

I thought adding Pac-Man was Shigeru Miyamoto's idea.

I thought adding Pac-Man was Shigeru Miyamoto's idea. If so, then bless him. Miyamoto is the hero video games deserve.

Except that Miyamoto hates plot and character progression and didn't want Rosalina to exist at all, let alone have the touching backstory that makes her such a memorable character.
Nintendo's classic creator penthouse is a pretty stifling bunch.

Er, I thought he was mad that Rosalina's backstory was snuck into the game without asking him, not the fact that it existed. And I've certainly never heard anything about him not wanting Rosalina to exist. Where the hell did that come from?
If he really "hated" plots as much as people seem to think he does, Mario RPG, Paper Mario or Mario & Luigi would never exist. (Side Note: This is not an invitation to start ritualistically shitting on Sticker Star.)

Yeah, people always seem to make these assumptions of these guys based on a few things that happened with them.
Don't forget he was also involved with Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Pikmin 3, both of which were rich with story and mysteries.

Miyamoto doesn't hate plot in all games, but he does believe that Mario games do not need story lines like Zelda or Fire Emblem. There's a reason why after Galaxy, story was essentially purged from all of the subsequent mainline Mario games.

To be fair, he's said that he considers the Mario characters as actors being put on different stages. Therefore Mario and Peach aren't actually a couple and Mario doesn't hate Bowser. That's why they enjoy go-karting so much.
Besides. Everyone knows Peach and Bowser are really getting it on behind the scenes.

Miyamoto made Zelda. I always find it hilarious when people say Miyamoto hates plot, in spite of him also being responsible for Nintendo's most plot-heavy series. XD And to be fair, the story in Galaxy was stupid. A lot of build-up with zero payoff and an ending trying so hard to be deep it just ended up confusing and disappointing. If that's the alternative, I'd rather the series has the kind of stories Galaxy 2 and 3D World had. 3D World's final fight with Bowser was the most cinematic thing the series has ever had, and it was amazing. To go back to the leaked roster a little bit...
