Rob-bert, I want to know what you think Donkey Kong IS - seeing as what you think he ISN'T is what the games are portraying. Sounds like a tenuous kind of argument - one based on an imaginary DK, perhaps even the DK they imagined up over at the DK Jungle Vine website. I think he's a gentle giant. Not a rabid beast. He acts like the latter in JB.

The fact that DK uses his brute strength in every game he appears in proves otherwise.

I think he's a gentle giant. Not a rabid beast. He acts like the latter in JB. He doesn't act like a rabid beast - and he's definitely NEVER acted like a gentle giant. My diagnosis? Misconception. I prescribe a heavy dose of Donkey Kong gaming and call me in the morning

Well, I recently got my grubby mitts on a copy of DKR DS, but DK isn't in it. You are right about me not playing a DK game in a while, though.

DK should have been in DKR, even just as an unlockable. But then again, that game always gives me the feeling that Diddy was added as an afterthought to boost sales, and that Timber was originally supposed to be the star.

I never really thought about it. Would have it be as good, or as liked without Diddy though.

Why do I keep expecting Mariokart discussion every time I click on this thread?
Silly Phil...

Here's some discussion - why is the appearance of coins in AGP a negative? As I mentioned in my post, I see it as a postive and wish the coins were in every Mario Kart.

The coins didn't really seem to make a huge difference in SMK. And in MKSC they were mainly used to unlock the SMK levels (or at least that's what I used them for).
Not a lot of point having them in games where you can get one, three or gold Mushrooms if you're lagging behind a little - or where you can snake like a big loser *glares at MKDS*

What about the MKSC rankings?Alot of that was based on coins and that was a nice feature that I think should stay. I also think that they could perhaps be emphasized a bit more (coins giving you a higher top speed, perhaps if you have less than a certain amount of coins it takes Lakitu longer to fish you out (I aint saying he's a goldigger, but...))
Either way though, I fail to see how them coming back is a 'negative'.

I don't particularly care for the coins in SMK, since I felt like I had to worry about winning the race and making money. Same problem with Diddy Kong Racing DS, only you're absolutely required to finish first--there's no Silver trophy. I'd just as soon focus on one thing rather than both.

I don't think the coins have a negative influence on the games, but at the same time I don't miss them. I actually agree with Tei on this - when you're jumping ramps, dodging shells and Chain Chomps while trying to simultaneously do the math to work out what place you need to come in to get the Gold, last thing I want to do is break my perfectly timed turning circle skid-boost to grab a handful of coins. It's just one too many things to worry about. I also hated the Coin Challenges in DKR as well - although they were quite different. And what I hated even more was when I completed the game and unlocked the whole thing in reverse!! With coins in different places and harder opponents!! Screw that!! First time through was hard enough!!

You mean you would really back down from a challange!? Man, ya think ya know a guy....
I think the coins should return. I can easily see them being implemented as a way to unlock stuff, like buying things from a shop.

Yes - I know my limits, and spending three hours trying to beat the final Wizpig with Tiptup before switching to Bumper and winning first time was quite possibly the least fun I've ever had winning a game. Seeing as I'd used Tiptup all the way through, I felt I had been cheated of my victory. And then being told there's even MORE game!? In fact, the whole game again but harder!? Screw that. I moved on to something else. Goldeneye, I think!

I never even beat Tricky in DKR... though I only got it last year, and I didn't have the N64 set up for too long before switching back to the GameCube.
