First scan, bottom left corner, pic of Peach on a bike - Hammer Bro and Shy Guy are sitting on a fence watching the race. These two deconfirmed?

New scans confirm 24 characters, w/ or w/o Mii I'm not sure, and a few returning levels like Yoshi's Desert. You can apparently change the track features using your Miis, the example used being the Yoshi Sphinx become "Your Mii" Sphinx. I just checked MKSC and the Yoshi desert does not look like anything from that picture. The MKSC Yoshi Sphinx remains in the background while that picture show it next to the track. Damn, looks like they put a lot of effort into this, except for the graphics, which actually look almost N64 level. There definitly not N64 graphics. If they were, wouldn't all the characters be 3-D rendered sprites like Mario Kart 64? The graphics are defintly GCN. Compare this picture from MK64 of Sherbet Land and MK Wii's remade Sherbet Land. There is not many good images to compare with so here is some video as well. MK64 Sherbet Land (go to 0:57). MK Wii Sherbet Land (Excite Luigi video).

I wonder why it's so hard to make a game chuck full of characters? I would love to see a Mario Kart with 40 characters.

I wonder why it's so hard to make a game chuck full of characters? I would love to see a Mario Kart with 40 characters. That's a pretty good question. It would be cool to see and might have had a higher chance of happening back in the earlier days of MK before there was Kart selection. Every character (before Kart selection was introduced in MKDD) then would have to be modeled and have sound and animation and also be balanced as well. Now because every character starts off with six vehicles (3 Karts and 3 bikes and who knows if there are more unlockable but admittly some of those are the same with just different stats and colours) those have to be created as well and have all there indvidual stats balanced. All of that would take a lot of time to do as well. IGN has just posted two new videos and articles from the tracks in the Mushroom Cup and the Flower Cup. Next week they will do the Retro tracks and compare them to their originals.

This is true. But I would have liked more characters than vehicles. I think most would agree?

Yay! So happy Koopa Troopa, my fav game drone, is back. I'll be using him a lot, prolly since I dislike Luigi's controls in Karts usually. And also, this is really Mario Kart Wii and Mario Excitebike 2. Fantastic. Excitebike sequel on the Wii after all!

Just because Hammer Bro and Shy Guy are on the sidelines doesn't discredit them at all--remember Smash Bros.? If anything, it should add fuel to the fire. I can now definitely see these two being playable since they are clearly rendered in the same style as the rest of the cast.
And I think the whole multiple Kart thing is basically the compensation for not having more characters. To be honest, I think people would get tired of forty racers all with clear-cut classes and kart styles. Having the variation in what kart you use for a character is really the way to go to keep people from feeling bored with the game.

The Austraila release date has been announced. MK Wii is coming out on April 24 for $99.95 (that includes the Wii Wheel).
Also to comment on the Shy Guy's being playable, they are also used as hazards when they snowboard around certain halfpipes on the DK Summit track. It can be seen in one of the videos from IGN that was posted not too long ago.

Excitebike sequel, huh? I hadn't thought of it that way... *ponders for a bit* Awesome. It's a missed opprutunity not to have a Shy Guy as a racer, and I'm usually opposed to having generic enemies as racers. First, they were in Mario Kart DS and Brawl. Secondly, with the diversity the've shown since Yoshi's Island, the Kart selection would be amazing.

Definitely with the Mario series people enjoy having the generics as playable. I think because of the Paper Mario games and the fact that typically the generic enemies get a lot more personality than in most games. There are definitely standards that everybody likes: Goomba, Koopa Troopa, Hammer Brother, Shy Guy, Magikoopa, etc. It's easily one of the best things about the Mario series, imo.
Didn't that rumor, which got disproven, say Hammer Bro was playable? It would be awesome and makes sense if they're looking for a "generic" heavyweight.

Still, it doesn't make much sense when the drones are on the same capability level as Mario himself, or even Bowser for that matter. I know they're racing rather than fighting, but it's still pretty weird.
At least games like Mario Superstar Baseball and Super Mario Strikers made it so the drones are lesser than the team leaders, which makes a lot more sense.

Looks nice. Remaking the tracks is awesome. I'm actually getting more and more interested in this each time I look at it. I hope it plays well.

Your right, but I'm not concerned about Shyguy and Hammer Bro. I'm looking for Birdo and Diddy.

I still don't know why Wart hasn't been in any other games, yet the Shy Guys and Birdo are appearing everywhere! (all debuted in the same game if anyone was wondering)
