Without delving into the history of the Play Station (sic) fiasco, at one point... This is the SNES CD add-on, a 32-bit CD system. At one point in time, things looked good. Nintendo & other companies were said to be making Mario, Final Fantasy, Zelda, and Super Street Fighter, Virgin was porting The 7th Guest to it, and Sunsoft locked up console rights to Cyan games. (Cosmic Osmo and Myst). Ultimately, Nintendo abandoned it, and we got the PlayStation X, and.... What would have happened if everything had gone Nintendo's way? (If the REAL history happened, Sony would get the upper hand and Nintendo would be acquired). (Want the full story? Go somewhere else) If this thing was actually released, what would you like to see for it? A Internet browser/online game mechanism with a keyboard and modem? Ports of favorite PC games? Final Fantasy VII? A redesigned SNES controller like the PSX controller, except with A,B,X,Y instead of Circle, X, Square, and (what was that other one? Oh well) Speculate!

Well, as for that alternate history bit:
If Nintendo and Sony had built the SNES Play Station according to the original plan, then Nintendo would have given up all rights to CD-based software aside from that they made themselves. This meant no licensing benefits, but also no quality testing. At the same time Sony would have the rights to produce this system which could also play Super Famicom games. In short, if the plan had gone through without Nintendo pulling out then Sony would have been in a perfect position to screw Nintendo.
As it happens, Nintendo did pull out, retained the rights to their own software, and the licensing rights to other software, and made Sony very angry. Sony then took over the videogame market a few years later.
What did we learn from this? That's right... Nintendo pulling out was a VERY GOOD thing. Sure, they are no longer number 1 in the home console market, but they probably wouldn't even be in the home console market if they'd gone through with it. Then where would we be? CAN YOU IMAGINE A WORLD WITHOUT TINGLE!?

Triangle is the 4th PS button.
If it had been released, I wouldn't have known about it, probably, unless it was promoted as the new nintendo console instead of the N64, so I don't know what I would have wanted for it. A new Mario game or 2 (or 3, or 4...), and a new DKC, I guess. Yeah, back then, I only had Mario and DKC games, mostly.

Thinking about it, we'd have probably just ended up with the same first-generation games we got for the N64, but PS1 quality. A 3D Mario, possibly a Pilotwings... not as pretty though... and probably not as good.

That made me think about... will IBM or ATi take over Nintendo (and just because of the CPU and the GPU for GC and the Rev)? Time to throw my nVidia card away! But why could Nintendo realize what Sony intended to do?

If Nintendo let it go, the current present could be worse... The PlayStation X with SNES compatibility. Then Nintendo would of been acquired by Sony....

Microsoft is the most profitable company in the entire world... the X-Box is not a very profitable console, but it certainly sells a lot more than the Gamecube... and it sells more software too. Unless all home PCs were destroyed in a mass alien invasion, I'm pretty sure Microsoft would never collapse. You know Bill Gates makes as much money PER MINUTE as most famous sport players make in a lifetime, right? X-Box ain't going nowhere.
