In some action games like Super Mario Bros 3 and Kirby's Adventure, a vertical bar of 8 pixels width that consists of one single colour will appear to the left of the screen. It seems that it is there for action games that the stage will scroll both horizontally and vertically.
Now here is the question: Why is it there, (somehow) blocking the player's vision?

Unlike the SNES, the NES has to draw in the stage sprites continuously as you move. That bar is probably there because the sprites haven't been drawn in properly yet, or to cover the sprites as they load... which is probably why they often flicker as well.
