Finally, the 80's cult classic, "The Wizard" is set for release on DVD on August 29! ( source) Hey, if that awful Double Dragon movie made it to DVD, then there was always a chance for The Wizard. I know it's a bad movie. I know it's unrealistic. I know it's filled with video game inaccuracies. I know it's just an advertisement for Super Mario Bros. 3. I don't care! I love it in all its cheesy 80's, Nintendo propaganda glory! ;D And you can't deny it was full of great, quoteable lines. No word on special features, but I'm guessing there are none. It should, at least, be in widescreen, and with maybe the theatrical trailer (which actually does show footage that was ultimately deleted). Here's a bit of trivia: By now, everyone knows that Jenny Lewis went on to be the frontwoman for the rock group Rilo Kiley, but The Wizard was also the very first big screen appearance for Tobey Maguire.

It's a rather dull movie, video games or not. I figured it was already on DVD though.
"The Power Glove is so bad."

I always wondered how the main character's girlfriend knew about the warp whistles even though nobody had ever played the game before.

Haha, maybe she had imported it in from Japan. The movie was released on the 15th December 1989, and the game in February 1990... but Japan had it in October 1988! Same month as SMB2 was released in the US, if you're interested. So it's not entirely true that NOBODY had played it. Just nobody outside of Japan! Long regional wait times and marketing control was probably a lot easier back then.

All the same, I doubt Ben Savage's girlfriend imported a Famicom (or modded her NES) and the Japanese version of SMB 3.

She was clearly tapped into a higher psychic wave than we are capable of understanding.

That's because you're too young to be nostalgic about it. Ah, classic quotes.... Jimmy: "Califooornia." Nick: "You know, Bateman, I always knew that you were a jerk. I, just until now, thought it was guilt by association." Corey: "According to this, we're in Goblin Valley. Great. I mean it couldn't be Happy Valley, or Wonderful Valley. ...Goblin Valley. Why not Axe-murderer's Valley?" Corey: "Fifty-thousand? You got fifty-thousand on Double Dragon?" Haley: "Look at him! He's making the jump, it's his second time around, and he hasn't even taken a hit yet! He's a wizard!" Lucas: "I love the Power Glove. It's so bad." Haley: "He touched my breasts!" The M.C.: "I give you Video Armageddon!"

Because there are goblins in it?

Heh. It's just what Corey reads on a map. Another bit o' trivia. Here is every game that can be seen clearly in the movie: Double Dragon Ninja Gaiden Super Mario Bros. 2 Super Mario Bros. 3 Contra Metroid Mega Man 2 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Rad Racer Zelda II: The Adventure of Link Top Speed (which is the only non-NES game seen in the movie, and they mistakenly refer to it as F-1 Dream!) In addition to this, you can hear the sound effects to the original Super Mario Bros. in the scene where Corey challenges the salesmen. Also, Haley asks the Nintendo gameplay counselor about Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, and she later mentions Rampage and Dr. Chaos. Then, of course, there's the reference to the "Power magazines." Oh, and I forgot! Corey should be Gannon Banned for calling Zelda II "The Adventure s of Link!"

IGN has posted it's review of the DVD version of The Wizard. The reviewer actually gave the movie itself a 7 out of 10, but the whole package only got a 6 because it lacked any extras what-so-ever. (Not even a trailer.) I can't wait to pick this up next week! I feel a wave of nostalgia coming on. Good thing I've got my NES hooked up right now.

I bought the Jenny Lewis album called Rabbit Fur Coat before I even knew she was the girl from The Wizard. Great CD, by the way.

Interesting. I guess the game was an endorsement for more than just Super Mario Bros. 3. It's worth noting that SMB3 is the only game that gets mentioned in the credits.
