I came across vNES last night. Basically, someone created an NES "simulator" in Java that plays right in your browser window. Emulators, themselves, are perfectly legal, but it's the game ROM's that violate copyrights. There's an extensive list of games you can load into the simulator, and tho neither the Java applet nor the games are intended to be stored off-line, the very fact that you're loading them up in your browser is technically a download, even if it isn't permanent. Still, it's a nifty idea. The games run a bit slow and without sound (on my PC, at least), even with the latest version of Java. I'll remove the link if Fry deems it illegal.

I doubt it's legal... but it is pretty neat. Super Mario Bros. runs perfect on my PC, although the colour palette is a little off. Makes me wonder if it would work on the Wii's web browser... Nintendo will definately take down the site if that's the case.

Looks like vNES has gone offline, so someone must've decided it wasn't legal. Oh well. This is what the Virtual Console is for.

I've seen Javascript NES emulators floating around for a while. It doesn't work very well on my machine at all. Emulators are not illegal - copyrighted ROMs are illegal. Or rather the distribution of them is illegal. Playing them is a grey area, although from what I can gather it's not illegal to play an emulated copyrighted ROM. Thank God
