What is this thing and has anyone actually tried using it?
Only a few games support it: Kirby Air Ride and Mario Kart Double Dash
But did Nintendo actually have a hand in the Warp Pipe thing? How is it supposed to be set up anyway?
Anyone who's actually used it, fill me in.

The Warp Pipe was a fan-made thing that allowed you to use games that normally were compatible with the GC LAN cable and "tricked" them so you could use them online. I never used it; I didn't have a hi-speed connection at the time, first, and second, neither Mario Kart: DD! nor KAR seemed worth the hastle.

From what I remember that Warp Pipe thing was entirely created by fans... I believe this allowed you to play LAN-enabled games over the internet (LAN-enabled meaning that you could connect multiple GameCubes to each other for multiplayer, with games such as the ones you mentioned). EDIT: Ah, Tei beat me on this part I remember reading some stuff about Nintendo recruiting the Warp Pipe team so they could help them with the DS' online functions. They (the Warp Pipe team) posted some really weird images with clues (which somewhat creeped me out at the time) on their website and forums... but I haven't heard anything else about that whole deal.

I used warp pipe a couple times for Mariokart. It was just a shade too technical in the interface, and the framerate droppage was staggering. It was one of those hacks that people do just to do it. I'm sure they intended it to be a real solution to a problem, but it wasn't convenient enough for casual use. Just a cool historical fact.
