I had the original Playstation version way back when I actually had one. I could never get into it, and when the Gamecube came out it was actually the first third-party game I bought for the console. I was determined to find out what all the fuss was about. And I never did. I just don't get on with the ResiEvil games. They look great, they are quite scary, but I just don't like them all that much. And I've tried... I really have tried. Well... except Resi4... I haven't tried that yet, and I hear I might like it even if I didn't like the others Funny story... when I was working at Game over here a couple years back, quite a few people bought Gamecubes exclusively for the extensive ResiEvil back catalogue. And SSBM, duh... but I always found it odd that the "kiddy" console was sought after for one of the most "mature" game series.

I concede that I understand how RE wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. But even if you didn't like the "classic" style RE games, definitely give RE4 a shot. It's a whole new ball game. It's much more action-adventure oriented in a Zelda/Metroid kind of way. Aside from the improved controls and camera, you rarely ever need to worry about running out of ammo, and you're not limited in the number of times you can save. Those things, I know, bothered a lot of people about the classic games.

Hopefully Capcom will stay with the RE4 engine for the next game in the series albeit tweaked for the Wii.

If the news I've heard is true, the Wii RE works a lot like RE4. Check out Corey's thread on RE: Umbrella Chronicles for what's known.

TPCGW: Sonic Mega Collection & Sonic Gems Collection from Sega
While even today Sonic the Hedgehog is considered one of the gamings most legendary icons, most would agree that the little blue guy was in his prime during the 16-bit era. Fortunately, there's a compilation for that.
Sonic Mega Collection gathers seven Sonic games onto one GC disc with five more unlockable, including the Sonic & Knuckles lock-on versions of Sonic's 2 & 3. Conspicuously missing from the collection, however, was the Sega/Mega CD's Sonic CD. This was corrected with a follow-up compilation.
Sonic Gems Collection included not only Sonic CD, but also Sonic R and the previously arcade-only Sonic the Fighters/Championship. It also included six Game Gear games and two unlockable Vectorman games. Still, Gems Collection is considered a much weaker package, and there are still noticeable omissions. Namely, the arcade rarity SegaSonic the Hedgehog and the 32X's Knuckles Chaotix.
If you're looking for a chronicle of Sonic's legacy, these two packages should keep you going for a while.

And they have done! I bought both as soon as they came out. I used to secretly enjoy Sonic, and then lied about it to my Nintendo-loving friends. Haha. Those were the days.
Now it's okay to like Sonic and Mario at the same time, so I do.

Gems Collection was the game that made me buy a Gamecube when I did.
Well, that and the fact that Twilight Princess was still supposed to release that Fall at the time.

TPCGW: Tomb Raider: Legendfrom Eidos This week's game is a bit pre-emptive. The Gamecube version of Tomb Raider: Legend doesn't hit shelves until November 15 th in the US and (I think) December 1 st in Europe. However, this (along with Splinter Cell: Double Agent) just might be one of the last major third party games to come out on your faithful old 'Cube, and if you don' t plan on picking up a Wii around launch, than Tomb Raider is probably worth looking into. Lara Croft hasn't appeared on a Nintendo system since a brief outing on the GBA some years ago. But Legend is the new and improved Tomb Raider, and it's the first major outing on a Nintendo console. Essentially, it's an action-adventure game that mixes puzzle solving, platforming and combat with a few distractions thrown in along the way. The platforming takes a queue from the Prince of Persia series, tho the acrobatics never becoming quite as elaborate. A couple of motorcycle levels are included, but they are generally regarded as weak. The cutscenes apparently include QTE's (Quick Timer Events such as those in Resident Evil 4 and Shenmue) that keep you engaged. The largest downside to the game is its short length. On the default difficulty, the game is about 6-8 hours long. All that's left to do after that is go for a 100% collection rate. The game does include unlockables for your troubles, such as extra costumes and movies. Early on, there was talk of the Gamecube version including some exclusive extras, but there's no word on what they may be, or if they even made it into the final product. --- And with that, I bring the "Third Party 'Cube Game of the Week" thread to a close. It's been 37 weeks, and 48 games have been highlighted. Of course, there are still more third party 'Cube games to look into. Games like Time Splitters: Future Perfect and Viewtiful Joe 2 didn't get explicitly included in the list, tho they entered the conversation. I'll leave it up to you guys to fill in the gaps. The whole point here was to open up the eyes of Nintendo fans who often suffer from tunnel vision. Of course, we all buy Nintendo consoles for the simple fact that it's the only way we can play our beloved Nintendo games. But too often do we get carried away to the point where we're blindly shutting out everything else. Not only can this discourage third party support, but you certainly cheat yourself out of some truly worthwhile gaming experiences. There's a whole ocean of gaming available to you on your Nintendo box, and broadening your horizons will only make your gaming that much richer. See you next week in the new generation. TPCGW, signing off.

This was a brilliant, brilliant thread, Corey, and I think it will make an even more valuable tool soon (I'm hoping EB and the like will start to slash Cube games sometime next year, then I'll go through and pick up the stuff I never got to experience).
Once again, a big thumbs up to you, man.

A marvellous list. You know... if I'd been any quicker I suppose I could have made this a running feature on the website. Your writing is clear and concise, and I'm all for promoting Nintendo's interests in whatever way possible.
If you would consider a "Third Party Game of the Week" feature (So Wii and DS would be prominent, but there's wiggle room for your occasional forays into older consoles) then I would run it as a feature on NinDB.
When I get home internet back, of course.

Absolutely! I love writing about this stuff. Originally, I was thinking of doing Wii, DS, and possibly Virtual Console games simultaneously, updated Sundays (for Wii) and Wednesdays (for DS). But it would be better to stick with one game per week for all formats. I also want to change the name to something like 3 rd Party Showcase. "3PS" seems a friendlier acronym than "TPGotW". I should also make more of an effort to personally try out more of the games that I feature.

How about a GBA run? Its lifeline is about over too. ^^ I've enjoyed your comments (and adding my own when possible), so I'm happy to hear this being considered as a full-fleged feature on NinDB. ^^ Congrats. ^^

Sweet. Rightoh then. This will join my own Spotlight features that I plan on putting in place when the site's back on its feet. Cool. Congrats. You are officially the first non-me writer for NinDB

Its lifeline is about over too. ^^ I've enjoyed your comments (and adding my own when possible), so I'm happy to hear this being considered as a full-fleged feature on NinDB. ^^ Congrats. ^^ Do you mean a special thread for GBA games, like I did for the N64, or that games for the GBA should be included in the pool of possibilities? As Fry pointed out, the weekly feature will be mostly Wii/DS games with the occasional retro throwback, so the GBA definitely qualifies for that. And, Wildcat, I appreciate you (and everyone) adding your comments to the thread. Discussion is encouraged! Sweet. Rightoh then. This will join my own Spotlight features that I plan on putting in place when the site's back on its feet. Cool. Congrats. You are officially the first non-me writer for NinDB Cool! And this'll be the first not-mine website I've ever written for. So, is there, like, a secret handshake or something? This does put the pressure on to make sure my writing is high quality. No more hacked together features. I either do my homework or make sure I play the game myself. Thank you, everyone!

The way I see it happening is you will also have a forum thread (or entire board to yourself) in which you can also post your features and people can comment. We will link from the website feature to the forum feature so discussion can ensue. No pressure to write like a master. I will scan everything with my subediting eyes, and anything that makes it onto the website will no doubt be found by YoungLink or someone No secret handshake either. Like I say, you're the first. Unless I had been practicing handshakes alone for the last five years in the event of a writer... and I don't do that... much...
