Not a problem Here's some proof about the whole "Why Ice Climbers/Why Lucas" thing CAW Evolution Posted 8/17/2007 5:15:59 PM message detail These excerpts were taken from the official Japanese Melee site, so please excuse the rough translations. I know these have been posted a ton of times, but there are some people who think Sakurai's original intentions were just rumors, so this should clear that up. It is very possible that some of his ideas for Melee could come into fruition for Brawl (as speculated with Lucas). POSSIBLE NES CHARACTERS www.nintendo.co.jp/n01/n64/software/nus_p_nalj/smash/flash/1009/index.html"First, I had to decide on an NES character. Through order of elimination, the Ice Climbers were selected. Balloon Fight... If the balloons pop, he'd be useless. Urban Champion... He doesn't have many moves. Clu Clu Land... I'm not sure whether or not it's possible for Bubbles to fight. Excite Bike... Jumps would have to be attached to the stage, which would be unfair to the other fighters (this would be a problem)." LUCAS www.nintendo.co.jp/n01/n64/software/nus_p_nalj/smash/flash/0717/index.html"To tell the truth, I originally planned to include the protagonist of MOTHER 3 (Lucas), but since that game had been delayed, I decided to settle with Ness." I'm still browsing the rest of that site, so there may be references to some other characters that I have yet to catch on to. If I find anything new, I'll post it here.

That paragraph basically says that the Ice Climbers are a tribute to Famicom, not to Ice Climber game. But they're at least actual characters and do have a proper name.
No info on the Jigglypuff factor? If it matters, it seems fans still like that Pokémon. I remember that Jigglypuff was #2 most popular Pokémon in America during the 10th Anniversary polls at Pokémon.com.

Hey, Flip! I signed up to this forum to run something past you, and figure that this would be the topic for it... Wouldn't the website look nice and neat if the newcomer grid was 4x2, and the vetern grid was 4x3 but with 2 extra characters underneath that row and centered to be under the middle two columns? That'd fit perfectly in with the 'Predictor.'
To everyone else, I love your website here, and am an avid Nintendo fan.

Keeps Sakurai's site nice and aesthetic And what's up GG? Sorry I kept bugging you with all this hubbub last night--it's what I do

Nothing much, Flip. Just was bored during my internship, and thought of it. Figure it'd make a nice solid, perfectly formatted set of 20 fighters until Sakurai decides to reveal the hidden ones, starting with the two veterns who are left to fill the last row. (Likely Jigglypuff and Luigi) I, of course, believe the remaining default veterns to be Captain Falcon, Ice Climbers, and Sheik. Sheik being a transformation like Zero Suit Samus, wouldn't count to the total number, which would be 20. Giga Bowser and the three Pokemon of Red won't have their own pages.

Ummmm...........bump?
I've been thinking. Originally I thought there wouldn't be that many characters in Brawl. 35 at best. But it seems that Sakurai keeps surprising us. 40 seems more and more likely every day. I wondering how you guys feel about it. How many characteras are you expecting.

I'm expecting OVER 9000 characters, of course!
Nah, 40 is fine with me. That's the standard is most mother fighting video games. I remember that NeoGeo Battle Coliseum had 40 characters and the PS2 version of King of Fighter XI had a whooping 47 characters! (and only one of them was a clone)
I think Marvel vs Capcom 2 has one of the largest number of fighters in a single game.

35 is my small estimate. This list is crazy so far, BUT keep in mind that there are still a lot of veterans to be confirmed and hence forth the roster could remain small.
There were only like... 3 TRUE new secret fighters in Melee.

Melee also suffered from launch-title-idos. Looking at the roster, 21(22) was the magic number. But with how many newcomers we have so far, 40 is looking better and better.
Of course, my original prediction was 30-35. Now it's 30-40. Better, 33-37. IDK. I would like a lot of character, but is that really going to happen. As long as Sakurai adds the Nintendo quota I'm good.

I went into this thing going by the 40-character roster thing, but a couple weeks back I started to doubt myself...thinking we'd get a smaller roster of characters, like 35 or so. But to my surprise we're still averaging a character a week--there've only been a couple weeks where we haven't seen anyone, but we had Mario, Link and Pit in the same week, Kirby and Pikachu in the same week, and then Pokémon Trainer and Peach in the same week too. so the average still holds up. I'm thinking that 40 is gonna be closer to the final number again.

I've been saying 40 characters for ages, with 24 starters (I like the number of unlockables to be under the amount of starters). But now, looking at the fact we seem to have died off to 1 character a fortnight on the Dojo, I've adjusted my estimates of the number of starters and, with it, the total number of characters. I'm thinking perhaps 36 is more likely, maybe with 20 or 21 starters (just for flip, since he loves grids - 21 would be 3 x 7, with a final 36 being 4 x 9. That seems to work to me)
