Wwll I don't think we need to worry about the roster. I suspect I can be up to 50 characters, of course I in no way know this. 50 will not happen. 50 must though... If not 50 then 40... There's going to be 3x as many things in brawl then there was in the other games... It's not gonna be 30 that's for sure... We have too many franchise avalible right now...

Don't set yourself up for dissapointment hoping for 50 characters....
...because that's kind of stretching it a bit. Between 35-40 is realistic.

50 playable characters is the perfect amount Then the game is inperfect. 50 is definatly stretching it. Sakurai said he struggled to get 26 characters. Try 50 characters. I think 40 is the max we'll get. I'd love to be wrong, but we have to be realistic too.

Looking at what's on the site now, we have 19 fighters. 20 if you count Zamus. But, considering Sheik was not counted in the starting roster (as she was not separately selectable from Zelda), I think we're guaranteed at least one new character to make an even 20.
Of course, this all assumes Snake isn't secret... Otherwise, we have a perfect 18.

Unless a Mother character, a F-Zero character, and an Animal Crossing character are confirmed as starters and we have a perfect 21 (it is still divisible by 3 so we get 7 rows)

C. Falcon and Ness/Lucas would make it 21. Also don't expect an AC character.

You know, the number doesn't have to be nice and neat...nothing stopping Sakurai from laying a prime number on us. Come on, magic number 23!
I don't get this obsession with grids and divisible numbers. It's not a necessity, and Sakurai's not taking a page out of any other fighting game's book here; just because every Capcom vs. or Marvel vs. game has had a Grid-O-Characters doesn't mean Smash will.

All the stages and icons based on different franchises have playable characters, so why should AC be the exception? Why bother with Smashville and the AC leaf icon if AC isn't going to have a playable character?

Actually, I think Smash will, too. SSB64 had 12 characters (2 rows x 6 columns). SSBM had 25 characters ((2 rows x 9 columns) + (1 row x 7 columns)) Sorry for the double post.

Tei: Usually when you make something that will be organized into squares, you'll have it be divisable by something other then itself or 1. My guess is a roster of 36, which is divisable by 4 and 9, which will work for a roster. pretty much, I don't expect it to be a prime number
Arcadenik: I was going top say this ealier, but we may actually get an AX character. The reason is becuase AC doesn't have many fighters. It's a very relaxed game, one that would not offer it's self well to smash.

Okay, but say Sakurai doesn't adhere to that rule. Let's say this menu is completely unbalanced, while still looking neat. There's nothing stopping the character select screen from having a tail on the right or left side that goes like this:
[ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] [ ][ ][ ] [ ]
You know what I mean?
