I can't wait until Sakurai decides to mess with us some more by putting a Wii icon in spot #13, and Pikmin in spot #602. And then a completely identical Smash Bros icon that for some reason is in spot #19.
Hey, thats what I'd do.

If they were doing a general Nintendo character, like ROB, it would be a D-Pad. The DS Squares are way too specific to allow anything but a DS-specific fighter, if that is the case.
Oy vey...

Still think it is Touch! Generations... Both the US and Japanese logos are just too complex for Smash Icons.

Would'nt SSBB just have both of the Oundan/EBA groups in the game just to make everyone happy?

...I'm leaning more to this. Hey, either is fine by me. Ouendan/EBA character wins either way.

Ouendan / EBA character (alt costumes provide both - maybe the girls from each game too) was my bizarre left-field last character for quite a while. I still very much like the idea.

Umm... no. Only DS and Wii could grant arenas. NES could have ROB, but what about the SNES (Super Scope), N64, GameCube, or Game Boys?
I believe the series are listed in programming order in which they are listed in order of when they were included in Smash, which is why new franchises since the original appearence have mostly been after Kid Icarus, Animal Crossing non-withstanding.

You know, considering how one of Nintendo's "eras of gaming" has both a stage and playable representative--Mr. Game & Watch--it's not too much of a stretch to think that other such things could appear in Brawl. Granted, some won't have characters--DS Stylus? Super Scope?--but stages? Suuure.
I imagine a Wii stage would have (...ugh, can't believe I'm saying this...) Miis as the representative of choice. A level would probably be based on the channels you can download on your Wii--maybe even have some based on the VC titles you're currently storing. It'd shift, like WarioWare.
The N64 level should inexcusably take place on a giant N64, because the shape of the damn thing would make great terrain. Again, not much in the way of playable representatives, though. Except for the "NINTENDO SIXTY-FOUUUUUUR" Kid.
The GameCube era could be represented by the Operations Menu--you know, when you turn the system on and there's no game inside, or the lid is open, or if you hold down A. The menus could shift between the four different options the GCN had.
SNES could be another shifting level that takes place in various epic SNES-era games. This way you get a retro level for, like, Super Mario World, LttP, Star Fox, F-Zero, Earthbound, Yoshi and Super Metroid all in one go.
As for the NES...well, that's a good question. I don't know, really. Maybe on top of a giant ROB. Or a Zapper. Or something.
So really, there could be icons for ALL that stuff. We could wind up with friggin' 30 or more icons, depending on how much NIntendo wants to break the fourth wall.

SNES also had the Super Game Boy frames but that's hardly an independent application, unlike PictoChat or the Wii Channels.
Many things that are video game hardware could be turned into items, or perhaps moves for a character like 9-Volt from WarioWare. Unless they become Trophies and also Trophy Tussle stages.
