Geno was the third top request after Sonic and Dedede. And there was the SMRPG Legacy website claiming they found out Squeenix and Nintendo were hammering out a deal. However, I think we all jumped way too far ahead as far as conclusions are concerned. Geno was very likely considered--the entries that asked for him were very elaborate and included a ton of ideas. But we'll never know for sure what the real deal is.
And is Mario RPG legit? I mean, was that CONFIRMED? Square has been pussyfooting about the VC, and I doubt we'll get the game anytime really soon.

Probably because Square Enix owns his ass and Nintendo didn't want to bother negotiating or cough up dough to have him in when they just aswell can add any other Nintendo character. Geno's not worth the trouble and I think the same will happen with ssb4 really.
e: was a reply to Smashchu, didn't know they actually tried to hammer a deal. Unless that's another bullshit rumour from ye olde smash hype days.

Really, characters from SMRPG are part of the reason I'll never forgive Square.
They had no hand in M&L SuperStar Saga, but somehow Geno made an appearance in there.
They made Mario Hoops 3-on-3 and still didn't add Mallow and Geno, of all the perfect opportunities...wasted with stupid Final Fantasy characters.
Too ironic, really.
And if Geno is a supposed Mario character, if you will, then why the fuck isn't he owned by Nintendo? Or why not Square just hand him on over to Nintendo?

To piss off people clinging to that character.
Also to have Nintendo fork over cash for the guy probably.

Or why not Square just hand him on over to Nintendo? Ah, but they did. AlphaDream is made of former Square members, most of which worked on SMRPG. As for the latter, they retained rights to original characters in SMRPG. Simple as that.

I really don't think having more third-party characters in SSB4 is the best solution. Its not like Nintendo is scrapping the bottom of the barrel to come up with characters that could be potentially fighters. Dixie Kong, Krystal, Isaac, and Little Mac are obvious good choices.
Throw in a few unusual character choices with unusual gameplay styles like Commanding Officer (Nintendo Wars), Team Rocket from Pokemon Yellow (Meowth teamed up with Koffing or Ekans), Overalls Wario (with Wario Land abilities influenced by the opponents' actions), and Duck Hunt Dog (uses stealth and duck-hunting tactics)
There are bound to be replacement characters. The most-likely being Lucario and Ike getting replaced with newer characters. Replacing the Pokemon Trainer may be even possible. Just replace the first-gen starters with third-gen starters and replace Red with May (I mean the game version). That'd give the fans a chance to finally play as Blaziken (and Mudkip and Grovyle).
I guess clones are okay, but only if it makes sense. So if we are getting more clones, I can see Donkey Kong Jr. being Donkey Kong's clone, Louie as Olimar's clone, and Dark Samus as... ugh, Samus's clone. I can even see Ninten showing up as a clone of Ness and Lucas... the Wolf of the Mother franchise.
How many characters did I just listed above? 15+ potential newcomers. It isn't like the third-party characters are the only ones with unusual gameplay styles. We got Olimar, Pokemon Trainer, Ice Climbers, and Zelda, to name a few.
Anyway, I'm gonna get back to my current favorite game, SSBB. Later.

Duck Hunt Dog (uses stealth and duck-hunting tactics) When you say it like that It makes me want to think of Duck Hunt Dog as a Solid Snake Clone. Which is awesome.

Commanding Officer (Nintendo Wars) This is the only time I've agreed with a character selection of yours. And it could very well be the last.

I am curious as to how you could use stealth moves in a platform/fighting game... because the very idea seems simply absurd to me.
Duck Hunt dog didn't even have any moves! Dive behind bushes, pick up ducks, laugh at you... Couldn't he just be an Assist or something?

I'd put him in a Duck Hunt stage. The game is a classic, as memorable as games originated in arcades. Though 3-D models of old characters are always welcome.
Also, I like Arcadenik's idea about a versatile Wario from the Wario Land series. It's the first time I read somebody saying that.

I'd like to see the option to play any of the games tracks on any stage (for example, you could have a Mario-related track playing on a Zelda or Metroid-themed stage).

Yeah, this has been discussed in great detail I'm against that. I like the idea of each stage having their own set of songs. Kind of counter-productive to have just a whole bejumble of music, but perhaps it's better for some of those songs like "Lip's Theme".

It's pretty much the only way to put more user customization into the My Music feature.

The Itadaki Street DS game for DS was another Square/Nintendo cross that actually used SMRPG music, and NOTHING ELSE. I just hope that because Japan is finally getting SMRPG on the VC we will see it come out Stateside and finally in PAL territories. That should spark interest in the game again, I would hope. People knock it for no real good reason. It's a solid game. And, frankly, I would totally peg Geno as a "Mario RPG" game rep well above any of the Paper Mario partners (who are pretty unoriginal in design).
