This is not about games that didn't made it, but characters. Having Birdo and Tracy doesn't mean that Mario and Zelda aren't popular, but rather that nobody cares about these two characters. And nobody cares about the infantry units (obviously, all the attention is on the COs). Its more like this Masa, Wars caught enough in Japan to get at least sequel in every Nintendo system this far (minus the Virtual Boy and the N64, and a game was planed for the N64) This is a game about forgoten characters, so seing three Japan only characters (Mapo, Takamaru and Hikari this far) would actually ad to that in a internationally release, Now the fact that the game might be to Odd for the maistream westen audience its another thing.

It's not so much that I begrudge their presence in the game, just some leftover bitter feelings about Brawl's treatment of the Wars franchise.

Love the designs for Tracy, Takamaru, and the Infantry. Might be because this is their first 3D appearances and they actually look normal.
Devil and Birdo... not a big fan of the new designs but hey it's just one game, I prefer the Smash designs for most characters in this game (Hikari, Little Mac, Devil, etc)
Aaaanyways, I'll be importing this game for sure now (because now there's no way to censor Crazy Tracy). It looks hilarious.

If it does get a NA release, they could just say the Infantry are from Advance Wars. It's not like the Infantry in that game is given much attention, either, and the redesign would be just another redesign in a game with several,
Also, the soldiers wanting to win a volleyball tourny is hilarious.

Oh and if this was for obscure series and games we'd have the protagonist in GiFTPIA and Chibi-Robo, not Mappo and Tao.

I also found this:
So if you touch the black guys you have to beat a minigame to keep advancing. They are definitely not Mr. G&W.

Unless the minigames are Game & Watch games?

Sounds more like the shadows from the Zelda II overworld.

Actually, I would like to know who this Otsu-san really is? IGN lists the name of the golfer as " Ossan" instead (is "Otsu-san" a mistranslation?), and tells that he is from Famicom Golf: Japan Course and Famicom Golf: US Course (on NinDB, the titles are listed without "Famicom"). Does anybody know where to find a list of the golfers from these games? Japanese Wikipedia usually has such stuff, but there are only short descriptions for these two games merged with the article for the Mario Golf series.

I've not found a list, but I'll try and get you a screenshot. There's a whole group of characters in NES Open Tournament Golf who are almost totally forgotten (in fact, there's different characters in the US and Japanese versions). I wonder if they're connected (as Open Tournament Golf is basically Japan Course and US Course combined).

"Ossan" literally means "Old guy". Just for the ones that aren't fond too much of moonspeak.

I wonder if they're connected (as Open Tournament Golf is basically Japan Course and US Course combined). Thanks for your effort! EDIT: Forget what I wrote here before, it was totally wrong. I checked the first scan and there his name is written "おつさん", so Otsu-san is correct, not Ossan. You can see his name here in the upper-right corner: gonintendo.com/wp-content/uploads/84980_viploader695606_122_170lo.jpgEDIT: Argh, I get crazy! It could either be "おつさん" (Otsu-san) or "おっさん" (Ossan), because the characters つ (tsu) and っ (geminate consonant) look so similar. I still don't know what's correct!

Doesn't a small "tsu" signify the next consonant is doubled? So Ossan would in fact be correct.
Anyway, it just says "Golf" as the game he's from, so it's probably just the golfer from Golf (I imagine he's annoyed from always being mistaken for Mario!)
I was going to say, because I was fairly sure in Golf Japan/US Course the only available characters were Mario and Luigi... New characters weren't introduced until NES Open Tournament Golf - but surely that page would have mentioned that.

Anyway, it just says "Golf" as the game he's from, so it's probably just the golfer from Golf (I imagine he's annoyed from always being mistaken for Mario!) I was going to say, because I was fairly sure in Golf Japan/US Course the only available characters were Mario and Luigi... Okay, finally, it's Ossan and he's from the NES/Famicom game Golf, not from Japan Course, US Course, Open Golf or anything. However, I always thought that this is Mario, too, I even read it in official (German) media (of course, don't always trust non-Japanese Nintendo media). EDIT: I searched for "Captain Rainbow" and "Ossan" (in Japanese) with Google, and got convincing results (and there are MUCH more results than with Otsu-san). I have no doubts anymore. Actually, I shouldn't have any doubts about Fryguy's comments.
