I was wondering though the issue had been brought up before... Is it fair that Wario is the only character with an alternate costume? I think potentially all characters could have alternate costumes if you think about it.
It could be the third unlockable! Well we have a trophy for each character beating Classic Mode, and a trophy for each character beating All-Star Mode. But what if we brought back the standard Adventure Mode? What would each character get for beating that mode? Well that's where alternate costumes come in. They unlock a new costume plus the trophy for it.

To an extent. I find that certain characters besides Wario could have alternate designs, but there aren't alot. Mario comes to mind (Dr. Mario,) as do Pikachu (Pichu,) Samus (Fusion Suit and orange two-piece,) Fox (Adventure,) Falco (Assault,) and Toon Link (Melee Young Link, maybe with the LttP hat-tunic color thing,) but all in all the alternate design idea seems rather unimportant.

It would be kinda hard for some characters to have alts, since it wouldn't make much sense to see Dr. Mario billed as "Mario" on the selectio screen and using Fireballs and FLUDD.
Characters like Wario and Fox are actually known to change their wardrobe without going into a different form or gaining new powers or anything, so it makes sense for them.

True. Other thoughts for Mario I had were that sunglasses and Hawaiian shirt from Sunshine and several sports outfits. I settled on Doc for his history in the series.

I wouldn't say Pichu is an alternate costume to Pikachu. He's a completely different character.
I don't know if the same applies to Dr. Mario... But the key thing about alternate costumes is that they're alternate COSTUMES. It's that clothes, hair, or accessories that change, body shape won't.

I only think it's unfair because Samus deserves the Fusion Suit. It should be her main appearance, if they wanted to go in chronological order. This Samus has the Zero Suit and Varia Suit so it's presumable she'd fit in between Prime 3 and Metroid II. Doesn't wear Zero Suit after Prime, this Power Suit design is in the post-Prime games. Or it's Samus before the Prime games period.
But either way I expected the Fusion Suit, and I hope they add it into the next game as a costume. That and Wario with overalls were the main costumes I expected as alternate, so I got one correct. Oh and Doctor Mario, which sadly didn't happen.

I wouldn't say Pichu is an alternate costume to Pikachu. He's a completely different character. Not necessarily, since both Pikachu and Pichu aren't necessarily single characters.

But they are. Their anatomies are completely different.

The point in an alternate costume is for looks and that it doesn't change anything in battle. If Pikachu were to become Pichu, he would be smaller thus affecting the battle.
I figure Pikachu's alternate costume would be the Party Hats he had in 64.

But they are. Their anatomies are completely different. As a related species their anatomies are close enough to where it wouldn't matter. Surprisingly, that's not necessarily true. A resized Pichu could in fact make Pichu and Pikachu the same size, and since the average Pichu's size is a mere 4 inches shorter than the average Pikachu, the resize isn't too far-fetched. And if you're still unconvinced we could try Pachirisu. And while we're on the topic of Pichu, I MAY have found a source for those goggles of his: Gold from the Pokemon Special Manga. Now, the argument is weak as hell because all I have to go on is timeframe, a black-and-white picture of him wearing the goggles, and the fact that he owns a Pichu. Here's Gold.

No, Pichu's hit box would be different. Some of the attacks that require the tail or legs wouldn't be long enough. Its very diferent. And besides, the most important thing about costumes is that they are costumes, something you wear while still being the same character. Here's something interesting I just read on a Japanese site. They're doing the same thing, trying to figure out the colors, and what they relate too. For Blue Kupa: "Blue (Blue Team): FCD version of Super Mario Bros. 2, the SFC and the color of Yoshi cookie appear KUPPAAO version" Whatever that means, it's interesting to see what the Japanese think. You can see it here. www13.atwiki.jp/sumaburax/pages/53.html

A costume is an alternate skin for the character, purely for asthetic reasons. Resising the character is not a costume, it's an entirely new character.

Wow that japanese website I posted is really interesting, they like to break down every little movement and find what it relates to.
Why they even took notice to how Pikachu rides the Warpstar like he's Surfing. And I thought we took crazy attention to detail!

Look, all I'm saying is that, if you can make Mario's arm stretch to three times its size and if you can imagine Pichu being four inches taller then you can make Pichu work as a costume for Pikachu. I never once said that I'd be happy to have Pichu as an alternate skin, just that I could see it happening.
And if you're really going to be THAT uppity over the idea than at least look at the other possibility of a Pichu-styled Pikachu. You know, solid black tail, black-rimmed ears, pink cheeks, that black bow-tie pattern on his chest, and no stripes on the back, but on Pikachu's body.

REKKINGUKURU, BURAKKI
Anybody know what that means? Its where they say Mario's Foreman Spike costume comes from.
