Wrecking Crew, Blacky
It means that Mario's Foreman Spike costume comes from the Wrecking Crew character Foreman Spike, or in Japan, Blacky. It's the design from Wrecking Crew '98, as told by the Mario Wiki, the Japanese SSB site says that is, in fact, the case.

Fryguy still insists that it isn't, but that's only because the costume looks black in Brawl as opposed to brown, which is how it appeared in the previous SSB titles.

Ah. I wasn't sure if that was Wrecking Crew or not. Also, the only notable one thus far is they say that Falcon's light blue costume is the anime Falcon. I'm inclined to agree now:

I'm posting the sprite, courtesy (again) Mario Wiki. It's so dark brown, it's almost black. It's like how Coke looks black until you've drank it to the dregs and you see it's actually brown. It's believable as Foreman Spike black or brown for that reason.

Mario's costume was based on the NES version of Foreman Spike, not the SNES version. He wears brown and white there.

Whatever. Point is, it's either Foreman Spike or Hammer Mario, and I say Foreman Spike.

We established that a long time ago. Fry still says that it's no longer a Foreman Spike reference due to looking more black than brown.

Then let him call it Hammer Mario.

Boys, boys... we're splitting hairs. And regardless, if most people see the reference as one thing, that's probably what it is.

Oh, we are? Good. Makes my head look more real.
Seriously now. You're right, it really doesn't matter, sorry Man-Frog.

The dark-brown & cream costume in SSB is definitely Foreman Spike because Sakurai says that it is on his SSB64 site. The costume has evolved since then, and now it no longer looks like Foreman Spike's colour scheme. The brown has become nearly black and the shirt has become totally white.
It's clearly the same costume developed over time, but it's no longer a convincing Foreman Spike reference... I don't know what to do with it.

Maybe just leave it as is and point out how weird it is that the costume inexplicably changed over time? I'd still bill it as a Foreman Spike reference by virtue of the blue shoes.

And by virtue of evolution.

Evolution from what? It was a Foreman Spike reference from the beginning!

Evolution from brown to black. DUH!
