Hm. You could always have it work like Poochy. Poochy you could never control in the Yoshi games, but you could hop on his back. Perhaps that how Rambi could work as well.

I think there should be limitations with each animal and vehicle, depending on how they are like in their original games.
Poochy - horrible control and cannot jump at will unless it is going to jump over something that's blocking its way, but can run over your opponents
Rambi - better control than Poochy, can jump at will but no double jumps, can ram into your opponents
Goomba's Shoe - easy to control but horrible speed, excellent jumping height and powerful stomping attack when landing, no double jumps
Excitebike - controls just like Wario's Bike move, run over your opponents, no double jumps, cannot get knocked off the bike unlike Wario's Bike move
Drill Dozer - easy control and can jump at will, no double jumps, but must hold the A button to keep drilling
These rideable animals and vehicles would make things more fun and interesting. Its not a drastic change to the SSB formula, its just adding to the SSB formula. A drastic change to the SSB formula would be changing the control system from SSB-style to Street Fighter II style or changing from 2D to 3D like Power Stone.

Now I just thought of a new stage:
Mario Party Relive this party in Smash. The background has several tents (based on MP8's Star Carnival), confetti falling all over the place, and right near the brawling grounds are an oversized Mario cap and also oversized, upside-down magician's hat. Ballyhoo and Big Top are in the background, cheering on, atop the magician hat's brim.
The terrain is comprised entirely of spaces. Each with their own effects:
Blue & Red = Nothing. Just there for show. ? Space = Causes...stuff...to..happen... Eh, the rest? Your call.
Dice Blocks appear often and dish out items, depending on the number rolled. The higher the number, the more useful/stronger the item it deals.
After a while, any mini-game begins. I'm not sure whether these should be interactive or just for background show.

You know I had a similar idea once about a Mario Party stage.
Except its a moving stage that moves to different spots on a giant game board depending on where you land after hitting the dice.
-Okay, picture it like the F-Zero stage or the Delfino Plaza stage where you make stops at different spots on a much bigger environment.
-Only now imagine that every spot you stop on is a different board space.
-A Dice Block appears and you hit it to move a certain number of spaces around this huge board game.
-A miniature map of the entire board is always there to show you where the stage is.
The main stage has two floating platforms and and a floor that sinks into the spots that it lands on. The map of the stage always stays there between the floating platforms.
There are three types of spaces. Blue: which is a safe neutral spot with a solid floor. Red: a hazardous spot with a lava floor or spikes or who knows? Green: a random spot that has a floor that could be bouncy, slippery, or wind blowing from it.

All I've read are new item ideas, new stage ideas, new Assist Trophy ideas, yes, I know I suggested a lot of these, too, but what else can add new life to this tried-and-true SSB formula? I remember reading somewhere Sakurai saying just adding new characters don't justify a SSB sequel. I think that was one of those Iwata Asks interviews. Melee added Side B moves, aerial and standing dodges (rolling dodges were in the original), up and down throws (left and right throws were in the original), Multi-Man Melee, Home Run Contest, Adventure Mode, All-Star Mode, Event Mode, trophies, tether recovery, Coin Battle, etc. Brawl added Final Smashes, multiple air dodges, swimming, gliding, climbing, crawling, improved tether recovery, improved Adventure Mode, Boss Battles, stickers, Assist Trophies, CDs, Stage Builder, My Music, online play, co-op play, different Target Test, Masterpieces, Chronicle, etc. What new additions could potentially work well and still be fun and not drastically change the SSB formula? Grabbing/throwing characters in the air? Sliding down the slopes? Rideable Assist Trophies? Bring back "Board the Platforms"? All are pretty good ideas that adhere to the SSB formula.

Why didn't they bring back the Platform Test this time anyway?

Yeah, board the platforms was good and fun. Where target smash tested your skill in attacks, Board the platforms had your skill in recovery. Maybe they should make one for another skill... though i can't think of any other skill you need in a smash game. Dodging, maybe?

"Platform Test" sounds more convenient. Or maybe "Platform Leap". Hmm. Maybe a "Speed Run" Stadium game. Choose one of five obstacle courses and reach the finish. One player only, time trial.

Hey, I like that Speed Run stadium idea... Melee's was all right, and I liked the three paths you could take even though you had no opponents to get past by (which was kinda boring). I really like the idea of choosing five different courses from easy to intense. Maybe Easy could have no opponents and a pretty easy run while Intense have a few opponents and more hazards like spikes and lava and ice and bumpers.
What about Snag the Trophies in Melee? I liked that aspect of the Classic Mode... maybe there could be a new mode where you could try to snag as many trophies as you can within the time limit or something.

A survival stadium were lasers bombs and all sorts of hazards come at you. Survive them all and pass. Each characters Survival Stadium will be different depending on the character. Like Meta Kinght will have platforms disappear and reappear at different spots forcing him to fly around all over the place without falling or being hit by the appearing Bumpers. Survive until times up to Clear.

That would be a perfect example of an avoidance test.
Let's see the minigames and skills they test: Target Smash: Skill in landing hits. Board the Platforms: skill in recovery and aerial movements. Homerun Contest: Skill in racking up damage and sending opponents far. Multi Man: Skill in KOing multiple opponents fast.
So.... I think the only skill that would be left for testing would be: dodging.

I like to think that the "Snag the Trophies" mini-game in Melee is to test your juggling skills. That would be neat to see that return in SSB4, juggle trophies and see how many you can snag within the time limit, or maybe endlessly snagging trophies until you miss one.
Dodging is pretty tricky to test... you would have to jump over projectiles or even have to use different kinds of dodging techniques to avoid stuff like Tabuu's butterfly of death move.

Perhaps you could do something like that with the Sand Bag. Keep him in the air as long as you can. He'll continue to shrink each time you hit him, making him harder to smack back in the air. The game is Clear when Sand Bag gets so small he disappears.

even have to use different kinds of dodging techniques to avoid stuff like Tabuu's butterfly of death move. Which I still can't do by the way. Anyway, I don't really see the need for a dodging minigame (probably I just use the shield move - which I find more reliable to be honest).

And I hope if there's anything like this, it will actually give you trophies. Far better than the current way to get trophies in Brawl.
