I'm searching for original artwork of Princess Peach Toadstool and Bowser, King of the Koopas, from Super Mario Bros. Maybe it's artwork that only Japan saw. When searching for Peach's "original" appearance, I do usually get something like this:
However, when you look at the Japanese cover art for SMB that was partly used for the European release, you see she looked originally very different. And Bowser and other characters are more or less different, too:
Peach is tiny there. I don't know why Bowser is blue/grey here, but especially his snout looks different (only look at the nose-trills).
Curiously, another old artwork was recently reused for a German DVD release of the SMB Super Show. Peach seems to be a little girl even smaller than Mario.

Japanese unpainted figurines of little Peach and... a mature version of her? Did she age after she was rescued by Mario? Some curse made her little? Really, could someone bring light into this?

TRsRockin.com offers several photos of old Mario merchandise, also showing relevant artwork, namely these ones:

You see that on many pictures Peach, Toads and the enemies are already much closer to their current appearances. But Bowser's snout is still the same and he has an immense number of small spikes on his shell. In this poster (or whatever it is) for Japanese SMB2 (Lost Levels), Bowser got his appearance from 8 and 16-bit days.

Well, that's what I found. But I couldn't find separate artwork for the original incarnations of Peach, Bowser, and also not for most of the other ones. Or is there even any? Which artwork was used when SMB hit America? Is there a special reason why Peach was so tiny or was it just character development (but then what's with those figurines)? Would be glad if someone could answer any question.
