Did you honestly expect more from something Miyamoto is working on? Be happy it's not just four Marios. Even then, we'd have a likelier chance to use a Wario and Waluigi colored Mario pair.

Although I do wish they'd chosen different characters other than a pair of generic Toads, I don't think laziness is the reason for that choice.
Who are the other candidates, really? Yoshi, Peach and maybe the Wario Bros.
Yoshi's out, because you can ride Yoshies in the game anyway.
Peach is obviously the damsel in distress, so that's her out too.
That just leaves the Wario Bros. There are a few possible reasons I can think of for it not being them. Main one being that both are considerably larger than the Mario Bros (Wario horizontally, Waluigi vertically). Would probably cause some problems when it came to stages where hiding in gaps to escape being crushed is important.

I really don't see what the big issue is. I really couldn't care less about Wario and Waluigi (at least in a main Mario game other than an antagonist role), and an all new character would probably result in people wanting Toad or some other character there. Mario and Luigi are there and that's all I've ever wanted (ever since I played Superstar saga) so having another 2 characters is just an added bonus to me, and apparently none of them have different abilities. I agree with Kirbychu's reasoning about the characters as well.
I kinda feel a bit like there's not much news to discuss atm so I think I'll dissappear for a while and return here when something I'm interested in discussing comes up.
Cya in a while...

Perhaps they wanted to focus on level design and gameplay over a superficial thing such as side characters? Lets be honest. You're not going to get any character development in a game such as this, nor do you need any. So I'd rather them spend more time on the levels and gameplay- the important stuff.

Miyamoto games always focus on the core intentions of gameplay and creativity. That's what you play them for. Then the colorful worlds and cast come next. But he is never the type to focus on bonus items much.
I respect Miyamoto, please don't think otherwise. He's got a few things I disagree on, but he reaches his goals and sets high standards. I just do not think I'd expect a playable bonus character (that's not Luigi) in a game he's heading. That's fine, the game still looks wonderful. The mechanics of the raft and the light are amazingly clever, and the Koopalings are the best thing I have seen in the game involving environment and cast. Beating out the power-ups, SMB3 and SMW memories will flood back as I battle them all again.
Now, let's hope for renders. I loved looking at New SMB's CG before the game came out ( \like someone said previously), and I can picture the seven siblings in 3D perfectly.

And then, the Koopalings may FINALLY be cloned again and again and become spinoff-mainstream =D
The interview is still good news. Koopalings are actually confirmed to make a comeback!

It would have made sense if they'd made a slightly different story so we could have Peach as the fourth playable, recreating the team from SMB2. But we can't have it all, and people would moan if they didn't have all their super-skills from that game... I am looking forward to the Koopa Kid renders too. I've been drawing those suckers since... well, since SMB3 came out! And I'm interested to see how they 3Dified them (as for some of them it seems an impossible feat!)

If there's a new Mario Baseball game, it would be great to have all 8 of Bowser's children in Bowser's team. I also wanted the Koopalings to be the villains in 7 boards in a Mario Party game for a long time even if its too repetitive like the last 8 Mario Party games. Also, I am just happy that Toad is finally playable in a main Mario game after 20 years and not in a Mario spin-off game.

Haha I don't mind Toad either. Just blue and yellow don't seem to look right.

Wh..why not? The first two characters are red and green...

Red Toad would only break the pattern of different colors to separate players. The point of palette swaps.
I'm unsure why two Toad was picked over another Mario, but it's awesome to be able to play as one again. And see how Power-Ups affect them.

I don't see why they couldn't, but I'm kinda curious.
