Could Yoshi eat the Hammer Bros in SMW? If you mean the Amazing Flying Hammer Bro's... then no, he couldn't.

... I think not. Neither the Bro or the hammers.

Wouldn't being able to eat them make the Hammer Bros. too easy to get past? I've always seen them as the most potent non-boss threat in the series. And I figured that was deliberate.

No, seeing you have to get pass their array of hammers before being able to eat them. It's harder than fighting them back with their own hammers.
Also, for Hammer Bros don't annoy me that much as Lakitus, especially when there are multiple of them. (And none of them are as bad as the I-won't-let-you-get-pass SSE enemies.) You can fight them with Hammer Bros suit, Fire Flower, or simply brave it out and quickly run past them, losing whatever powerup you have at the moment.

I would've thought Yoshi's tongue was long enough to reach them without having to worry too much about the hammers. And Lakitu are easy to kill.

I've gotten through World 1, and I really am liking it. Alas, my car became shot to hell yesterday, so my enjoyment was tinged with a lot of upset feelings about what we're going to do about the car. *sigh*
I also have played through the game a bit with my wife, who normally doesn't like these types of games, but she's having fun, too. She's more upset about the car than I am, though...so the fact she liked it at all makes me happy.

Hammer Bros. weren't in SMW. Only the Amazing Flying Hammer Bros. I dunno if he could eat that one.

How much would replacing an engine be in Hong Kong, YL? Sorry to be off-topic, but I can't add any Mario related tidbit to my post right now.

Yeah, I meant the Amazing Flying Hammer Brother. So this is sorta consistant!

Okay, I've 100%'d the game. Some thoughts.
Overall, the game is a return to SMW era greatness. Alternate paths, interactive overworld maps (SMW had a seed of this in areas like the Forest of Illusion), Yoshi. The four player mode is nice, and a fun diversion. But single player reigns supreme.
The sheer amount of gimmicks is amazing. You'll hardly run into a level that doesn't have a unique mechanic, be it Para Beetles, Jumbo Rays, a Bone Dragon roller coaster (Yay for Yoshi's Story!), and more. These are never intrusive, and are always intuitive. They add so much to the game, saving it from being another generic Mario game.
The new suits are amazing. The Ice Flower is so much fun- I hope it stays in the series for a good long while. The Penguin Suit is a nice gimmick, but not really useful. The Propeller Suit out right breaks some levels though- just like the cape!
The difficulty is perfect. Only the last few levels in the game are truly difficult- but that is not to say the rest of the game is easy. It isn't. It's just right, comparable to SMW in terms of difficulty.
In short, its everything I could have hoped for and more!

No more complicated alternate routes, this game. And no. I said this many, many times, but SMW is not difficult at all. Just fly over almost every stage - or, even if you play fair and square, it's still easy. I'm more concerned about death counts now. Say, if I miss 7 times in a stage, save and quit, and reload the game, is the level counted as being missed 7 times or 0? Death count plus unwinnable condition. I know this game is great, but this part is just a big, big thing that shows Nintendo is learning from IntSys in terms of game design flaws (or, frankly, the developer being unfriendly to players). How much would replacing an engine be in Hong Kong, YL? Sorry to be off-topic, but I can't add any Mario related tidbit to my post right now. Not much knowledge in automobile, sorry. A quick internet search told me good ones are about 2500 HKD (or slightly less), or about 320 USD. My info may be inaccurate though. My father once managed to buy our former (second hand) family car at 6500 HKD (830 USD) or something.

I'm loving this game. The first world was good, but seeing a heap of SMB3 enemies pop up in the Desert world raised it up many pegs. I'm in Level 3 so far. ^_^

So, is this game as hard as it was made out to be?

From the vids I watch and the comments I hear, yes.
I doubt that feeling will last long though. Once I get used to the game, I would have probably beaten everything else easily.
