LOL I know it is just a game, but I would like the story to be a bit more consistent, you know? I don't like it when the game insults my intelligence and expects me to forget what I have known in past games.
Personally, I think Cranky Kong is an old gorilla who was living vicariously through Donkey Kong's life that he deluded himself into thinking he fought Mario during the arcade games and Donkey Kong Jr. was put on a bus. I read somewhere that Rare redesigned Donkey Kong Jr. for Donkey Kong Country but Nintendo didn't like it so they renamed him Diddy Kong as a separate character. Wouldn't this imply that Donkey Kong Jr. did not grow up into Donkey Kong and that Diddy Kong simply replaced Donkey Kong Jr. as Donkey Kong's sidekick?

Mario was younger in his Jumpman phase. Old DK was old but not old enough. Both characters matured. DK Jr. and Mario were the same age. DK Jr. grew up to be current DK and Jumpman became Mario.
How hard is it to figure out?

Well, yeah, that was the original plan. But the plan- and the story that goes along with it- was changed.
Officially, the arcade DK is Cranky, DK Jr. is nowhere to be seen (excluding apperent time travel in Mario Tennis), and arcade DK's grandson is the current DK. This has been the story since Rare's first DK game, so it's been consistent in that regard.

The last time DK Jr. appeared was as an audience member in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! He's pretty easy to miss. Now it seems he's all but disappeared and has essentially been replaced by Baby DK.

How hard is it to figure out? So, does that mean Baby Donkey Kong was actually Donkey Kong Jr.? Ahh, I still say Nintendo should have designed Baby Donkey Kong after the original Donkey Kong Jr. (complete with the white spandex with the red J on it), not after the modern Donkey Kong (a bib version of his red and yellow tie), to make it crystal clear that Donkey Kong Jr. grew up into the modern Donkey Kong. Well, that or make a new Donkey Kong Jr. who is the son of the original Donkey Kong Jr. LOL And what are you talking about Man Frog? Where is he in Mario Kart: Double Dash? I haven't noticed anything out of place.

Arcadenik, now you're just blowing all this completely out of proportion.

Ugh...
We don't know who Baby DK is. And we don't care, because there's no way to tell.
All we DO know is that Cranky is DK Sr. and that the current DK is either his son or his grandson. That's it. Nothing more.
DK Jr. has essentially dropped off the face of the Earth, so none of this matters.

Personally, I'd say all these errors and problems storyline wise are because there are two different ideas of who DK is going around at Nintendo, one side agrees with Rare and thinks Cranky Kong is the original and the current DK is a laid back hero who may be an older DK Jr (Mario spinoff creators, PAON, maybe Namco, etc) and some seem to have missed the memo and think he's some jerk from the arcade games who beats things up for the hell of it (Artoon, Mario vs DK team, Nintendo Tokyo).
In other news about the game, I'd like to say a few things:
1. Animal buddies and other Kongs are pretty much confirmed, and it's annoying me how many are just assuming their absence based on a four level video. Hell, it's funny how few read this from an Official Nintendo Magazine (it's like Nintendo Power) article:
With the usual barrel-full of collectibles, cameos from other Kongs and blasting about, this is a real fan-pleaser.
2. Rambi ain't Mugley. Really, one's a rhino, one's a chameleon frog thing. There's no similarity.

Baby DK is obviously the current DK. Those seven Babies were born with Stars in their hearts. Why would Cranky get this special privilege? No pay attention the answer is clear:

Unless current DK is his son, in which case he hasn't done anything but pick up a tie and get rid of the onesy. So he either went bye-bye or became new DK. Either way.
I am reminded of my own family now. My father is a junior. He goes by HL, his father by Leon, their middle name. I can guarantee that if I was HL the Third, I can tell you that one of us, either my father or me, would be using a pseudonym, and since Dad has CDs out that are older than me, well, let's just say I wouldn't be HL even if I was.
EDIT: The first half of this post was directed at Man-Frog. Same-timing is annoying.

And from that last post or so, I'd say it'd be awesome if you could unlock more playable characters later. Dixie Kong should be playable, but it'd be pretty cool to play as Kiddy Kong as well. But that's really pushing it.
Similarly, it'd be awesome if KAOS was a bad guy in this. Sure, it was controlled by K Rool, but it's technically not a Kremling, and Donkey Kong Land 3 shows it's usable without DK and Diddy as a power source. Not gonna happen, but you've still got to admit he'd make a cool K Rool stand in.
Or for even more unlikely foes, imagine if Boss Dumb Drum, Krow, King Zing, Arich or Bleak returned as bosses. That would be real awesome fan service in some way, and none are Kremlings so...

I'm pretty sure NONE of that's gonna happen, with regards to the bosses, anyways. Zingers, Neckies, and Gnawties? Maybe. Returning bosses? No. Why no? Well, what boss other than K. Rool has ever been recurring? (This, by the way, is as opposed to being a recolor, such as Really and Very Gnawty.) Now, I'd LOVE to be proven wrong here, but it just ain't likely.

Basically what Shrikes is saying is that if K. Rool ain't getting in there's no way any other enemies or bosses are getting in.
