Well, Donkey Kong was big in 1981 and then kinda died out. He was revived in 1994, and largely rode on the tail of nostalgia. Hell, 1981 was before my time, but it got a lot of the press excited, and that got us excited.
What's worth remembering is that Donkey Kong Country came out 17 years ago, so "modern DK" has now been around longer than "classic DK". He's not new or cool. He's just a gorilla. In a necktie.
Also remember that Rare's leaving wouldn't have made much of a difference, as their DK games hardly ever had DK in them in a playable role.
Regardless, I love DK, I think he's a great character and I love his games, from the classic arcades through to DKCR and many of the spinoffs.

The only two big DK sites I can think of are DK Vine (which we both post on) and DK Atlas (which is kind of in the shitter at the moment). Wait... Really, who are you?

You mean you don't recognize your old pal "Man-Frog"? Yeah. As much as I love DK, he actually doesn't have a lot going for him character-wise. Wario has the greedy slob angle. Most other protagonists such as Link have the prettyboy hero angle (and in Link's case he's also kind of a dork). Quite a few characters have the "cute" angle (like Kirby) or the "badass" angle (like Snake). But DK? His personality hasn't even been consistent! He went from being a stubborn brute (at least, during the Cranky years), to being a painfully 90s party animal to being a deranged jackass to being...an ordinary gorilla. If left up to me, I'd give him the personality attached to him in that one GameStop commercial . The idea of DK being a gentleman poet voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson (at least I think that's him) is pretty darn unique in today's world of video game protagonists.

Dang ever since you changed your name I didn't know who you were! I thought you were some newer member.

He comes off as a mellow kinda guy who doesn't really let much bother him (with the obvious exception of losing his bananas) to me. DK spin-offs helped this perception.

I think he's a simple ape who would love nothing more than to relax all day. But he'll step into action when he needs to. His ... shall we say low intelligence however gets him into trouble that he doesn't really mean to cause.

I really don't like the idea of DK being slow-witted, given how smart real gorillas are. Its kind of an outdated depiction.

I really don't like the idea of DK wearing a tie, given how naked real gorillas are. Its kind of an unrealistic depiction.

Well... he's an ape that can use a gun, play videogames, play music and do a lot more. And really, the fact that he can punch the moon back to the earth is making him more than just ordinary.

I really don't like the idea of DK being brown, given how black real gorillas are. Its kind of an unrealistic depiction. THIS IS INCREDIBLY SILLY. Let's talk about monkeys. So, yeah, DK? Definitely not a series that appeals to the newer gamers, but then, it really doesn't need to.

Well it needs to if it wants to survive.

It'll survive, dude. DK's got a different appeal, the same appeal as Superman and Mickey Mouse: Legacy. When your great grandchildren hear about video games of the past, Halos and God of Wars will be there, but the one name to stand out? DONKEY KONG. Because he is a gaming icon.

Why are you worried about it not surviving exactly? What has put this scare up you? Donkey Kong has always survived. The original DK was huge and DKC was huge. The sequels have never performed as well, and the spinoffs have always fared worse. DK is more like a Star Fox or F-Zero - known well enough, but not so much that you can just slap the name on a box and expect it to sell. A tiny handful of franchises have that honour, if honour is the right word. However, DK is a big name amongst gamers and within Nintendo... and that will always translate into quality games and enough sales to make it worthwhile. Some figures to put your mind at ease:- Donkey Kong Country: 9.30 million copies sold worldwide
- Donkey Kong Country 2: 5.15 million copies sold worldwide
- Donkey Kong Country 3: 3.51 million copies sold worldwide
- Donkey Kong 64: 5.27 million copies sold worldwide
- Donkey Kong Country Returns: 4.96 million copies sold worldwide as of April 2011
See? It's no Donkey Kong Country, but DKCR is on-course to be as popular as DKC2! That's pretty good! And considering Donkey Konga, considered a success, sold just over 1 million copies, we can breathe easy that DK isn't going anywhere for a while. Edit: A Few More Calming FactsDonkey Kong Country Returns has sold more copies than: Animal Crossing: City Folk, Super Paper Mario, WarioWare: Smooth Moves, Metroid Prime 3, Pokemon Battle Revolution, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Punch-Out!!, PokePark Wii, Mario Sports Mix, Wario Land: Shake It!, Metroid: Other M, Metroid Prime Trilogy... In short, DK has outsold all Wario, Metroid and Pokemon games on the Wii. Relax buddy!

Eh sorry about responding so late, but I was just reminded of this.
I'm not worried about DK surviving I'm just pointing out how small his fanbase is. And as I've pointed out before, fanbase =/= sales. DKCR may have outsold a Metroid game but that doesn't mean it has more fans. Donkey Kong has great appeal to general audiences, but a hard time picking up dedicated fans. This is why it sold so well, the general audience bought it.
But yes I was reminded of this because of that other forums I go to mentioned how DKC is "a generic platformer with boring characters" again. It gets irritating.
