Mother 3 is regarded as having one of the best stories in video games and yet I can't help but be annoyed by a few things.
The whole concept of the Egg that hold everyone's memories of old is incredibly stupid.
It's supposed to prevent people from doing what they did to the world before but...
If people don't remember the mistakes they have done in the past then they are very likely to do it again! We learn from our history and know not to make the same mistakes.
Not to mention this utopia created years ago on the dragon was made while every still had there memories. They were doing the right things even when they had all their old memories. Why did they need to replace all their memories then?
That the big one but I have a couple of other things that bug me too.
Honestly... my favorite Mother story is... the first one! Its so simple and charming, it warms my heart.

Yeah, the whole "doomed humanity" thing was a little depressing. Everything about the game seemed to be depressing for depressing's sake. Then there was also Porkey in the Incredibly Safe Machine. Talk about forced Deus Ex Machina.
Still though, it WAS a good game.

Of course it was. I just think it's kinda overrated. The whole anticonsumerism moral and living without technology seemed hypocritical seeing how this was being told on a video game. That like a TV show telling you TV is bad.
Ahem anyway I suppose where it shines is through the characters and how well written they were. The stuff with the family is gold. But the whole humanity dooming itself with TV seems ham fisted.

The whole point of everyone removing their memories was to create a society where it wasn't possible for them to make the same mistakes. They can't go down the same path because they do not have the concept of money, for instance. It is important to remember that the people who left for the island were a cult though, so their logic might be purposefully flawed.
I'd also say the Absolute Safe Capsule isn't a Deus Ex Machina because it is built up. From the time you meet Dr. Andonuts, you're left wondering why Porky would kidnap him in the first place. Coupled with Porky's plan, it gets a decent amount of build up prior to its introduction. It does solve the problem pitch perfect, though.

The whole anticonsumerism moral and living without technology seemed hypocritical seeing how this was being told on a video game. That like a TV show telling you TV is bad. Watch Max Headroom, it rocks ant its exactly that. I Still like MOTHER 3 story a lot, part of its charm its comming to the game knowing nothing about its story.,and they encurage it, the back of the box ofthe game just says "For the Gameboy Advance" . The Magufin Egg its actually downplayed because the real meat of the story its the interaction of the characters and seeing how normal people react to all of this.
