Hey hey, been awhile here. Happy new year by the way! Just curious what everybody's favorite game (and perhaps most hated game) they played in 2013 was. And despite the thread title it doesn't even have to be restricted to games that came out in 2013 - older titles you (finally) checked out last year are fine too! Doesn't have to be limited to Nintendo consoles either. Alright, so in 2013 I finally got a 3DSXL thanks to Fire Emblem Awakening and mostly for the X&Y October release later on, which I was sure would be my favorite game of 2013. [incoming short X/Y rant] Strangely enough the moment I played it (pre-)day one I lost interest pretty quick, even tho a good few people I know were finally getting back into Pokemon aswell. It's a crazy mix of different factors. Partly it's my own fault, looking at all those monster design leaks the week before release destroyed all sense of adventuring into the unknown (even tho I made sure not to look at the worldmap leaks, etc). Partly because I was still focused on 100%ing Fire Emblem and doing those daily AC tasks that I didn't have time/feel like sinking time into such a big game like X/Y. Partly because the redesigned method of online multiplayer and trading was so well done that every moment I played the game these features actually 'distracted' me and I just bred some starters and traded them online instead of focusing on actually getting through the singleplayer, something I really enjoyed doing in past entries. The biggest reason though is that X/Y's streetpass feature is garbage. I take the train daily and while AC and FE give me new houses and other player teams for me to check out every day, X/Y just gives you tickets. No random NPC battler based on you like in Ruby/Sapphire, nor does it send over the introduction movie with limited capabilities. To me personally this was all a let down, to the point that almost 3 months later I still haven't gotten past the 2nd gym. So yeah, Pokemon X/Y is still good PROBABLY, but it sure ain't my favorite game of 2013. That trophy goes to Fire Emblem Awakening. While Animal Crossing New Leaf got me from not giving a shit about AC to me anticipating a possible WiiU sequel, with the 3DS version allowing you to design your own town and actually sharing it easily via online multiplayer, Fire Emblem got me hooked the longest. Very few games that I replay shortly after finishing it to beat at a higher difficulty and this is one of them. I even had fun replaying it with a self set nuzlocke style rule. There's a lack of actual multiplayer sadly, but the streetpass feature makes up for it. The characters are great and the written dialogue is funny, especially the DLC ones (even tho $$$$$). Oh, and you can choose between US and Japanese voiceovers, thank god. I haven't gotten a WiiU yet and I haven't bought any Wii titles in 2013. I did get Ducktales Remastered for PS3 so, uh, I guess that counts? Actually yes, that very much counts. It might've been nostalgia doing it's thing, but I had just as much fun playing this as I did playing Mario Galaxy 2. A lot of modern platformers seem to be either too easy or frustratingly 1hit death difficult. To me this game felt somewhere in between. Gave me a tough time here and there, but never ever did it make me stop playing it. Unlike a lot of other people I enjoyed the extra goofy cutscenes explaining everything going on and making more sense of why/how Uncle Scrooge got there in the first place. And since I grew up with a locally dubbed version, Alan Young's wrong voice or whatever had no effect on me. And the soundtrack's awesome, including the new tunes. And that's it for me 2013-wise, though I also gotta mention Mother. Finally started playing that on the homebrew channel somewhere last year. This time I pulled through the very grindy start of the game and found the rest of it to be very enjoyable. Funny writing, odd, goofy and charming despite it's basic graphics. Still got to finish it however. I haven't touched it in awhile and like X/Y I need to find the time and will to actually finish such a big game

Ouch, 2013. The year that I didn't get many games at all. The only things I got were Luigi's Mansion 2 and Mario & Luigi 4. So naturally, they're the only contestants in my case. I liked them well, but they don't win anything from me. I'm still sticking to 2011 and 2012 games like Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Fire Emblem Awakening and Kirby's Dream Collection. Here's my all-time fav list: 1, Fire Emblem Awakening (2012) 2, Kirby's Return to Dream Land (2011) 3, Kirby Air Ride (2003) 4, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (2007) 5, Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010) None of them were out in 2013 (counting Japanese release). Oh, I play Flash games too. So I guess I'll give my personal favourite game award to the Scottish RPG Epic Battle Fantasy 4. Oh, and Japanese ARPG The Final Boss is in the Next Room is worth mentioning too, though the unbalanced level up choices and repetitiveness could use some improvement. Though it was out in 2012, I played it in mid-2013.

Gaming was fairly sparse for me, too, in 2013. In fact, the only game I've played that actually came out in 2013 is The Wonderful 101, but I technically didn't start playing it until New Year's Day, so I didn't even play it in 2013. I'll say my favorite is Pandora's Tower, which came out in North America in 2013. I've mentioned it several times before, but I waited a long time to play that game, not due to Operation Rainfall, but even before that when the Japanese trailer was first released. I'm so glad I was finally able to play it, so I've got a soft spot for it. Earlier in the year, I picked up Trauma Team on the Wii, which I never finished but really enjoyed. It's a real shame Atlus gave up on the series after that. USGamer published an article last year about how Atlus should bring it back. I posted a link to it on my Tumblr blog, and it got more likes and reblogs than anything else I've posted over there by far, so there's definitely a cult following. Other than that, I bought some Virtual Console games on Wii, and Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara on Wii U, which I played the heck out of. Also, the Wii U, itself, which came with New Super Mario Bros U + New Super Luigi U. I enjoyed those more than the Wii version for some reason. Oh yeah, and PC gaming. Got around to playing some stuff I got off GOG.com. I started off the year with Broken Sword, which has great animation and a good story. Then I played part way through The Longest Journey until my PC died and I lost my saves. I tried to start a new game about a month or so back, but got stuck due to a game-breaking glitch. Sucks, because it has a great story. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be. I also played and finished Myst V: End of Ages without any help! No hints or walkthroughs! I solved it myself! Otherwise, I spent a lot of time re-playing old favorites from my collection. That's pretty much it.

My favorite game from 2013 so far would be Bioshock Infinite. I really liked the storyline, characters, and the world of the game, and unlike some, I didn't think the FPS part was terrible. Perhaps not the best way to tell the story Irrational wanted to tell, but I had a wonderful time. The best game I played this year was not that, though. I finally played through EarthBound, and it is worthy of all the praise it gets. An amazing experience. I'd consider that the best. I also got through Cave Story finally (not through Hell, but I didn't want to replay it a fourth time), and it too is awesome. Sonic CD, which I haven't fully beaten, is also great, and I got much further than I ever did in my youth this past fall. I also gave Gunstar Heroes a go for the first time, and while I only played it on easy, I had a great time with it and marveled over its graphical tricks. I've also been replaying Brawl a lot with my two nephews, and despite the tripping, it's still excellent and makes me anticipate the new ones. Valkyria Chronicles is an fantastic strategy game, although it's taking me forever to get through it. XD Skyrim returned to my life and while it's still glitchy, the PS3 version at least is doing better than it was at launch, and I like the Dawnguard/Dragonborn expansions a lot. I also gave Demon's Crest a spin, and while I only got the mediocre/bad endings, I'm glad I have it. In terms of acquisitions I was jazzed about, I finally got Radiant Historia for Christmas, so I'm excited to give that a go this year. Pandora's Tower managed to find a US release thanks to XSEED, so I have all of the Operation Rainfall titles in my possession (and from what I have played of it, it's intriguing). The worst moment gaming-wise in 2013 was Ni no Kuni. I pre-ordered the special Wizard's Edition and was one of those poor souls who never got it. That sucked. I bought the game later and it seems interesting, so I do have some high hopes for enjoying it, despite the initial turnoff. I tried Lufia II out, but I didn't get the appeal (and the misogyny against the female cast at one point turned me off: Seran and Tia were the two best party members I had, and the game decides to send them home to keep them safe! BS!) Silent Hill 4 underwhelmed, although I applaud the attempt to do something different. The Guitar Hero games hurt my wrist. And I'm learning that I shouldn't buy AAA titles from Bethesda, Warner Bros., Capcom or Square-Enix new, as they tend to re-release them with all the DLC later. All and all, 2013 was not a bad year game-wise for me.

This was very much a 3DS year. I tried to love the Wii U, but NES Remix stands as my most played Wii U game of 2013 by a significant margin. I finally beat New Super Mario Bros. U, I played a chunk into Pikmin 3, New Super Luigi U and even picked up Rayman... But there's still very little reason to turn the Wii U on regularly.
As for the 3DS, Luigi's Mansion 2 was fantastic, A Link Between Worlds was also great (though did anyone else find the boss battles to be embarrassingly easy?)... And I LOVED Ace Attorney! I always love every new Phoenix Wright game, and this new one was brilliant. The new Mii Plaza games are without a doubt my most played games ever.
Oh, and I've played Pokemon X/Y a bit, but they haven't quite hit me in the same way as Black/White did. Still don't own Fire Emblem Awakening or Animal Crossing. I don't have time! I have hats to collect in Mii Plaza!
Other than that, I've been almost entirely focused on playing some old games I missed out on first time round. Not getting very far with Blaster Master... Nice tank mechanics, but I do not like those top-down shooting segments...

Oh, and I've played Pokemon X/Y a bit That's weird...why haven't I seen you online? I have to say, X and Y have become my favorite in the series for mainly two reasons. 1) No more sprites. I LOVE the 3D models. There are so many animations, especially in Amie. It's great and really gives the Pokemon different personalities. On top of that, Amie can make even the creepiest Pokemon adorable. 2) We are no longer limited to moving in four directions. I've been waiting to get out of that rut since Diamond and Pearl. I've got about 300 hours in Pokemon so far, but as for other games, I've almost got every trophy in Kingdom Hearts HD Collection which came out in September. Only missing the last few difficulty trophies because someone had the bright idea not to stack them... I also received the limited edition artbook and it looks all very nice. Kingdom Hearts is one of my favorite series of all time and I'm psyched as hell for KH3. I also just got Link Between Worlds. It's pretty fun so far, lots and LOTS of references to A Link to the Past which is nice. The characters looks weird though, almost like dolls. I wish they looked more like the official artwork. I would like to eventually pick up Animal Crossing, but I don't see myself getting it anytime soon.

I spent so much on games in 2013...
3DS Games - Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D - Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon - Mario & Luigi: Dream Team - Pokemon X (Chespin + Charmander) - Pokemon Y (Fennekin + Squirtle) - The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Wii Games - Kirby's Return to Dream Land - Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars
Wii U Games - New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U (bundled with the Wii U) - Pikmin 3 - Super Mario 3D World
My favorite games are Kirby, all three Wii U games, both Pokemon games, Zelda, and especially Animal Crossing.

Just played Fire Emblem Awakening and Pokemon Y this year, and both are great in their right own.

You know, I was always kind of interested in Kirby's Air Ride, but the only times I read about it are when people are badmouthing it. Not trying to insult your tastes, just interested why it ranks so high on your all time favorite list? Then I played part way through The Longest Journey until my PC died and I lost my saves. I tried to start a new game about a month or so back, but got stuck due to a game-breaking glitch. Sucks, because it has a great story. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be. Ahhh, that sucks. Actually I was ( still) waiting for the perfect moment to dive into season 1 of the Walking Dead adventure game, but whenever I felt like giving it a go my big juicy PC that's able to run it broke down. Three times that year. Hell it was broken down more months than it was working. I forgot I was goofing around with some Minecraft adventure mods awhile back too. Survive/build up a base and explore a randomly generated world... love that. Too bad I'm still waiting for that PC to get fixed! Valkyria Chronicles is an fantastic strategy game, although it's taking me forever to get through it. XD Oh yeah! I finally gave that a shot after being on my radar for so long aswell. Pretty fun Tactical RPG, though the unit movement system seems to encourage 1-man army rambo style play. Didn't even finish the (lengthy) tutorial though, was planning on beating Mother first and, well.... yeah. Still need to try out Sonic CD and Demon's Crest too. Auugggh, so many games so little time Oh and Ni no Kumi I consider one of the letdowns last year. Pokemon gameplay + Ghibli sounded like a sure success, but the intro was so slow and it somehow failed to captivate me. Quickly lost interest in that one. Supposedly it kicks it up a few hours in. I'll eventually give it a second chance, probably. Oh, and I've played Pokemon X/Y a bit, but they haven't quite hit me in the same way as Black/White did. Probably another one of the reasons I'm not into X/Y's singeplayer as much - Black & White seemed more story focused to me. Ofcourse I'm really not that far into X/Y so I might be talking shit here, but I really like how they did B/W's start with your two rivals. The whole 'first steps together' and Bianca's family issues were fun little evolutions (hurhur) from the simple rival system they had going on in previous games. X/Y's rivals seem pretty shallow in comparison. 1) No more sprites. I LOVE the 3D models. There are so many animations, especially in Amie. It's great and really gives the Pokemon different personalities. On top of that, Amie can make even the creepiest Pokemon adorable. This though is damn great. I never expected the first 3D Pokemon to have a Tamagotchi like mini game with extra animations and facial expressions for 700+ of 'em. It makes the monsters more alive then they ever were. I REALLY hope this isn't one of those one time deals like the first Pokemon following you around in HG/SS. Also I never expected the demonic Pokemon from the chaos dimension to have such a goofy smile behind that mouthpiece. Bahahaha

It's always interesting to see people trying out older stuff. You know, I was always kind of interested in Kirby's Air Ride, but the only times I read about it are when people are badmouthing it. Not trying to insult your tastes, just interested why it ranks so high on your all time favorite list? Music, and that it looked beautiful at the time. It's, objectively, very much improvable - it's horrible at game balance, it doesn't have nearly enough contents, not to mention it looks rushed (and all that efforts just to clash with Mario Kart and F-Zero) - but a combination of nostalgia and asset quality made it stuck in my mind, becoming my most-played GameCube title. The sandbox-like nature of City Trial helps.
