I've been thinking about this:
For some older Japan only games, as some of those have explicit contents in them, I wonder if they'll be rated M or even AO if they are released now in the US.
One of these examples is FE4, considering the really strange sexual relation between certain characters.
Another one is the Famicom Tentei Club part 2 - I mean, if its FC Mini version is rated 15+ by CERO, maybe the more strict ESBN will give it a M rating! CERO is quite soft (ESRB is quite strict either, and I'm fine with PEGI's ratings) on stuff like these, seeing that many ESRB rated E10+ or Teen games are rated All Ages by CERO.

I don't think any RPG developor (Nintendo especially) would want the stigma of a M or AO game and it would get censored.
But if for some reason they didn't care, I imaigne ESRB would have no reservations about rating them AO or M.

The AO rating is only given to games to force the publishers to change content. If the publisher refuses to change anything, the game gets a very limited release. It's a backhanded political tool used to curb freedom of speech and expression.

FE4 won't be a problem. In the original Japanese version of FE8 Ephraim and Eirika can get married in the end. All they'll do is change the plot around abit, so soccor moms will let their kids play the games.

I heard they made alot of changes to Fire Emblem games for the American release. They would probably do the same if any of the older ones were released over here.
EDIT:Crap. You posted that while I was writing this.

In the original Japanese version of FE8 Ephraim and Eirika can get married in the end. Oh really? (You know, IntSys is sorta..... evil? But Ephraim and Eirika got married!? Can you prove that? So far I only know where to find the original Japanese dialogues in a site (which suggests Dozla actually drinks wine - but somehow NoA censored that), but no ending descriptions are found there)

Wait...aren't Ephraim and Eirika brother and sister? Yeah, that's why they took it out of the English version. Stupid people would be upset by this.

I'm stupid. I'm one of those people that tends to support censoring.

I'm more a "If you don't like it, don't buy it." kind of person. If someone writes a story it doesn't seem right for someone else to change it. For example, you could take the "weed" smoking out of Lord of the Rings, but should you? It's not really that important to the story, and smoking weed could possibly offend someone, but changing something that one or more artists put hard work into seems wrong. Especailly when it's something important to the storyline like in FE8.
But I'm sorry about my last post. It was rude, and if you want I'll edit the last sentence out of my post.

It depends on the censoring. For example, if there was say, a explicit sex scene, I wouldn't hesitate to leave it out. Or excessive profanity, I'd tone it down.Or someone chewing on the innards of their best friends, I'd probably leave that out or at least make it less graphic. As long as the meaning and story stays in tact, I think censoring is good. It makes a product friendlier to a larger user base and thus 'teh moneyz'.
On the other hand, I look down on pointless censoring. Or censoring that is replaced with something nonsensical (You Spoony Bard?). It all depends on the culture you're selling it to.
