Yes, Yoshi Story is a 2D Plataformer, so it has 2D gameplay, really easy to finish, impossible to get all the melons...

Apparently you get a slightly different ending. I've only managed to get all-melons in 4 worlds before I start FREAKING OUT!!!

That reminds me... does anyone know if there's actually any truth in the purple Yoshi? It's listed on loads of sites, but... the task to get it just seems... rediculous. And impossible.

Purple Yoshi? I initially thought the dark blue guy was purple, but as far as I know, the only two hidden Yoshis were the black and white ones.

No, as far as I can tell, purple Yoshi is no different to Luigi in SM64 - a fake unlockable with such dire requirements that nobody will ever be able to prove it wrong. Until someone rips open the game code and finds out otherwise
