Forget what I said about this thingie not working with WW Touched! It works.
I've tried the FE9 code with Paper Mario 2 and it worked. Apparently, every Intelligent Systems game released on Super Famicom or later consoles work with the code.

This is probably a noobish thing to say but: couldn't you just turn the power off then turn it on?

No. At least not for Fre Emblem. By the time you press reset / power / whatsoever, your unit would be dead and the lose count of that unit is increase by 1. And so we need a *really* quick way to reset.

A software-initiated reset pre-empts automatic saving, when a power-down doesn't? That doesn't make sense.

No. FE has a saving system that "when the battle animation starts, data saves" - that is, you can restart BEFORE te battle animation that kills the character starts. Both soft and hard resets can do the work, but hard reset is more risky, because (1) you don't havethe time to crawl to the POWER button, and (2) if it's too late to do so, a soft reset may acumulate for your lose count; but a hard reset, when timed "correctly", will surely.... erase ALL data. The feeling of the data of an FE game being erased.... aww...
