I believe some of Nintendo's arcades that were clones of other games like Space Fever (similar to Taito's Space Invaders), Head-On-N (similar to Sega's Head-On) Block Fever and Monkey Magic (similar to Atari's Breakout), Radar Scope (similar to Namco's Galaxian) and probably Heli Fire (similar to Sega's N-Sub) are pretty much worse than Urban Champion.
Urban Champion was pretty revolutionary during its time in 1984. It was the:
* First fighting game created by Nintendo. * First fighting game for a home console that's not a home computer (which was the FC/NES). * First fighting game with background music played during the actions of battles (others had musical cues). * First fighting game to have easily controllable, reliable blocking, which is performed by holding up or down before your opponent executes a high level or low level punch, respectively. * First fighting game with dizzies. * First fighting game with a form of "ring outs" (later used in Taito/Allumer's Great Swordsman and several 3D fighting games like Virtua Fighter). * First fighting game where matches were decided by something other than health depletion or point totals.
Other than being an NES Classic, all of this are some reasons why Nintendo rereleases Urban Champion more often than their arcades mentioned above.

What I don't get is the title of this thread. Who said it was the worst Nintendo game anyway?

And since when has IGN been known for writing gospel? I'm pretty sure never.

Don't worry parrothead, because I name Urban Champion the best game Nintendo has ever made! THE BEST!
Now balance is restored to this world!

Urban Champion did a lot of things first, but it's still a pretty dire game. The gameplay is essentially Game & Watch Boxing (which came first), the action is horrifically slow and the controls very fiddly and unreliable.
It was born into a world of poor fighting games, where it actually stood out by doing some things first. But stripped of that context, it's dull as hell, and definitely hasn't aged as well as even other pre-SMB NES games.

I used to like Urban Champion for the goofy humor. It was hilarious to make your enemy fall into a manhole, being hit by a pot or, better, being caught by the police.
The controls are annoying though... It would be interesting to see a WiiWare sequel, or a Wii Punch-Out!! sequel with this as an alternate mode.

Ahh, yes.. Urban Champion. That was one of my e-Reader games, though I cannot find the cards anywhere at my mom's house for years now. When I first played it in 2003 or 2004, I thought it was pretty quirky. I liked the graphics and gameplay, keeping in mind that this was made in the early 1980's, so it was almost a decent game but not as good as Clu Clu Land and Balloon Fight in my opinion. But I don't know if it could really be called the worst Nintendo game ever... yes, it wasn't that great but it wasn't that bad! Off topic - I think Urban Champion should be added in Smash 4 as either an Assist Trophy or as an Adventure Mode enemy. That'd be pretty interesting to see.

Boxing and wrestling games don't usually count as fighting games, because they are more like Sports games. Speaking of fighting games of the 80s, I learned about Urban Champion when I created a thread about the first fighting games to feature something in history at the NeoGeoForLife forum: www.neogeoforlife.com/forum/viewthread.php?thread_id=2771

I would say it was the crappiest game Nintendo created.

I would say it was the crappiest game Nintendo created. Say high to Nintendo's early clones of successful games like: * Head-On-N (clone of Sega's Head On) * Heli-Fire (perhaps a clone of Sega's N-Sub. FryGuy64 never could enjoy it.) * Space Fever and SF-Hisplitter (Nintendo's versions of Taito's Space Invaders with extra modes) * Block Fever and Monkey Magic (clones of Atari's Breakout arcade) * Radar Scope (very similar to Namco's Galaxian)

They might be clones, but they were clones of popular games. While they themselves might not have been popular due to being misjudged releases, they were still enjoyable.
Urban Champion is a clone of Game & Watch game Boxing, which IMO is one of the most boring Game & Watch titles... Urban Champion is just very slow.
But then compare to other fighting games at the time (of which there were very few). It may not have been a good game, and it may not have garnered many fans, but it laid some foundations for the genre. It was the first one to have a power meter. That's pretty significant, right? Yie Ar Kung Fu, released the following year, also had a power meter, but it was a significantly better game due to fast action and variety of moves.
Urban Champion deserves the stick that it gets, as while it injected a few ideas into the genre, it did nothing to make the genre more enjoyable. That was passed on to Konami and later Capcom.
I wouldn't say it's the worst game Nintendo has ever published, but it's quite probably still the worst game they've ever made themselves. They've learned a lot since then.

Yet I have some good memories of me and my brother punching each other into manholes. Since I was no older than 4 or 5 years the slow and simple gameplay was a good match for slow and simple me.
Doesn't exactly have the same replay value as something like Wrecking Crew tho

Urban Champion bad? Nah. It may not be as complex as later fighting titles, but it's still a fun NES classic in my opinion. Heck, I remember getting up to Round 45 or higher (I actually forgot) in that game. Good times, really good times.
