It is and it isn't. But whether we recognize it as a third pillar or not is irrelevant. I think the mainstream has recognized it as the next Gameboy... and their opinions matters the most.

Am I alone in actually believing the DS is Nintendo's third pillar? Does everyone actually see it as a replacement for the Game Boy? I think Nintendo has yet to prove that. I'm sure they plan to, but they really haven't yet.

Its so much not a GB. The 2 screens are a dead give away. And because of this they'll still make DS games aft5er the GBE is relesed.

It IS a 3rd pillar - a mew GB will come, and it will stand against whatever Sony has.
I actually believe that the DS isn't comparable to the PSP - they are quite different.
One has raw power, the other is all about tryin out new things - it's like comparing a toaster to a sandwich griller - they do the same thing, but they're quite different in how they do it, and what the finished product ends up as.
The End?

Or comparing a standard grill to a George Foreman Grill... one is about new and better ways to grill food, while the other is the massmarket, tried-and-tested approach.
Now if only the DS had a big picture of George Foreman's grinning mug on the casing.

Nintendo won't go for mass marketing involving celebrities unless it becomes REALLY desperate. Picture witnessing a TV informercial advertising Nintendo's new console in 10 years, featuring Vin Diesel after he becomes the new Steven Seagal:
"And here's something that could have helped me when I ended up committed to the turdpile that was 'Chronichles of Riddick' due to scheduling conflicts: the new Nintendo 2015 is also a PDA, a GPS and a cell phone! And a cheese grater! Call now! There are only 2015 copies in existance! Call 555-NIN-VIN now, and nobody gets hurt!"

Nah... Nintendo only seems to use celebrity endorsements by sporting personalities later accused of rape. Mike Tyson, Kobe Bryant... Well... except Ken Griffey Jr... but he's been in the Simpsons, so he doesn't count
