I'm not quite sure if she is a he. Wikipedia says that the original Japanese character is a guy who thinks it's a girl, but newer game say otherwise. But then again the Mario Strikers site says it is a male. So.......anyone know the true story.

I think he was always a guy in Japan, but in the US he used to be male but was changed to a female over time. Apparently they changed it back now.

In Japan, Birdo is known as Catherine, therefore Birdo is a FEMALE.

The original SMB2 manual worldwide says Birdo is a dude who thinks he's a girl. NoA changed their tune, but I'm pretty sure Nintendo Japan didn't.
And NoA makes such an unforgivably horrible mess of Mario translations, so I'm sticking with Birdo as a guy.

Oh, come now! There are a few other manuals that mention Birdo as a girl. Don't trust old manuals! No one thinks Samus Aran is a guy, do they?

No, I don't trust NoA's translation team. They're better now than they were, but they have a lot of messes to fix. And Smashchu is right! The Mario Strikers Charged manual also refers to Birdo as a "he". Although I checked the Japanese Wiki page for Birdo and it mentions the gender briefly in passing, but with no definitive answer. And don't be so naive

There are multiple Birdos. The original Birdo was male. Now, the newer Birdo in all of the party games is a female. Or it's the same Birdo and they're a transexual...

Or it's the same Birdo and they're a transexual... Or Birdo's a hermaphroditic Which leaves the question about Yoshi.

I generally go with Birdo being a female, like with Vivian from Paper Mario 2. I know the Japanese games contradict this, but it's less headache to just go by what NOA says.

Elements in Mario tennis make it seem she is a girl. She has a female voice.
Japan is the country most likely to be admited into a mental institution. Nothing wrong with a few transvestites, and in children's games no less.

I think she's a girl. In my opinion, the Birdo blurb in the manual was by some disgruntled employee, like in the Disney films, missing clothes or a naughty image. I read Game Over by David Sheff, and it mentioned some third-party game, a beat-em-up, where the Nintendo figureheads did not like the fact that you had to hurt a woman. The Japanese said there were no women, and the NOAheads said it was the blond name Roxie (or Moxie, or something). "Oh, you mean the transvestite?". So Roxie was given a haircut and new clothes.

Birdo is disturbing, that's what the hell it is. Male, female, either way it has a vagina for a mouth and wears gaudy jewelry.

I still don't even understand why it's called Birdo even though it's clearly reptilian. And the eggs that come out of it's mouth have always looked like chicken eggs.... except in SMRPG and MKDD where they have pink spots.. Face it, if it came from the Kingdom of Dreams, it's gotta be messed up.

Actually, you'd be surprised how closely related avians and reptiles are. It's pretty neat. The biggest hint is a bird's legs and feet--bird legs are covered in scales and have wicked dinosaur talons.
However, in this case, I'd file Birdo under "hallucinatory" before "avian" or "reptilian." I'd also file it under "the visual result of too much whisky and Pixy Stix within a short amount of time."
