Sigh, back to punching in the spoilertag color...oh well ;D
I kinda approve of this list even if some of the hidden guys are fake. And Funky Kong is a big surprise, but I could really get behind him - he was my favorite character from that crappy DKC CGI show. ;D

Edited my list with yet another NEW addition to the cast, confirmed with pics on Gamefaqs. Let's just say he's a very, very old friend >.>

Yeah, the characters are defiantly awkward this time, but I think Mario kart has had a pretty good record of choosing good characters. Just this time they chose everyone you didn't expect, and overall, it's looking good.

Daisy is obnoxious enough as she is as a grown-up.

I doubt its fake. Everybody seems to need a counterpart in this game, to the point of having Dry Bowser in, so that character in as a counterpart doesn't surprise me at all.
Also, based on this counterpart stuff, I'd hazard a guess the last middlewieght has to be Dixie, surely.

There's one more character left, and I agree with DiU's sentiment. There's only one other option it could be other than the one he offers, and that is Birdo. Because their familiar needs an opposite just as well.
I'm actually proud of Nintendo for having the balls to go ahead and do this. The roster impresses me beyond belief because it's basically a fan roster if you think about it--the characters they chose are ones that most people really wanted, over the more generic options we see in games like Tennis and Baseball or past Kart games. Now if only the next Mario Kart can finally start adding more retro or obscure characters...
Also, TV Eye, here's the weights since I noticed you're missing them:
Weights:
Toadette -- Light Rosalina -- HEAVY Funky -- HEAVY Jr. -- Middle
And while we're at it, Magikoopa was a lie. It's actually, get this... a BIKE. There's a Magikoopa riding a broom bicycle for Bowser/Jr./Bowser Bones.

Because their familiar needs an opposite just as well. Yeah, thats the other likely option methinks. Either way though, Rosalina and Yoshi / Diddy are going to be the only ones without counterparts, if you make the slightly dubious claim (but it works nonetheless) that Bowser and Junior are counterparts, and King Boo and Bowser Bones are also. Yes, its a stretch, but both are essentially dead kings. Kinda.

Call me crazy, but wouldn't Bowser Jr being heavy and Roselina being Medium make more sence? Not that I'm saying that's not the way it is, but it just seems odd

The final character is supposedly Birdo. Also, I agree with your sentiment about the Mario Kart Wii roster, it is easily the best one to date. The only characters from previous Mario Karts that are not in this one are Donkey Kong Junior (who has not even been playable since the first one), Petey Pirahna (though I don't think anyone even liked him or he had very few fans), and R.O.B. (though I think he has a better gig now with being a playable character in Brawl). The roster has plenty of pleasant surprises (Rosalina, Funky Kong), a WTH choice (Bones Bowser), and a character that will get the overall scorn of the fan community (Baby Daisy). Mario Kart Wii's roster was a bigger surprise than that of the Brawl one (I will discuss this in a future topic for another time), and that is what I like is surprises, especially the pleasant kind.

If the other babies didn't get enough of thatComparing it to Brawl: Seems this game was more devious then Brawl. Even if we didn't like the roster, we expected most of it, and had reasons for everyone. Mario Kart: not so much. It may be we don't care enough and anything is a surprise, or they chose outlandish characters. I guess I'll leave the rest open.
