An evil part of me hopes they don't show up. Not only because I don't care about them, but SMRPG fans must SUFFER MORE AHAHAHAHAHA.
Anyhow, I've known for awhile there would be FF characters in 3 on 3 from some news post I read long ago. I just didn't know who. This lineup is infinitely better than the alternative... Cloud, Sephiroth, Squall, and co.
I can't wait to see the "third roster".

This gives Squeenix a chance to "appear" in SSBB. Probably no fighters though.

Firstly: The likelihood of Cloud, Squall, Tidus, Tifa, whatever... was slim to nill. Why? Because none had appeared on a Nintendo platform (outside of minor cameos). It would've been essentially advertisting for Sony, and Nintendo wouldn't have allowed it.
Secondly: Kingdom Hearts is not the greatest game ever made. Yeah, it was fun. The sequel is also fun. But they're not fantastic. And no, Sora is a Disney character. Get over it.
Thirdly: It was pretty obvious they'd go with generics over names. Who the hell is going to play Mario Hoops on the DS and actually know who Locke or Bartz or Kain are? But if they go with the generic "Lol white mage," kids might be more inclined to recall it. Sadly, that's the same case for Mallow, Geno, and any other SMRPG character: it's just too old now. Ten years old, to be exact. A decade. That's a HUGE difference, considering most people who are playing DS these days were only 6 at the time of that release (yeah, it's an average, and assumed, demographic, but likely)
EDIT: Might I add that this was what I expected, and I really really like it. A lot. They even designed them too look "Mario-esque." Ninja is drawn shorter like Mario, White Mage has a Peachy flair to her, and Black Mage looks like he belongs in Paper Mario. As for Moogle and Cactuar, they were simple enough designs already, but they definitely look like they fit in.

^Regarding the artwork, with the exception of Daisy, who looks slightly off, the rest of the characters look great - particularly Bowser.
Paratroopa and Boo are in one of the screenshots on the main site, and I think a couple of other guys (Shy Guy, at least, from memory) have been seen in other shots, so its looks like theres a nice slection of characters.
And back to the topic, thats what, two Mario games that have other companies characters characters as cameos (MK Arcade and this) and two other sports games which the Mario crew have made cameos in (NBA Street and SSX), right?

Well... the third roster still gives the SMRPG characters a chance. Saying they won't include Mallow or Geno because the game is 10 years old is a bit nonsensical. This IS a Nintendo game we're talking about!
I wouldn't be surprised if they're included just to make all the SMRPG fans run out and buy it.
Sora is not a Disney character.
And finally... the artwork is awesome. I'm loving the latest generation of Mario artwork. It's clearly vectorised, and it's marvellous!

Sora is not a Disney character. Sora is a Disney character. It has been confermed many times before. There was a topic on Smashboards about this to. Anyway the third roster might be Mario characters such as Koppa, Boo ect. They have appered in screenshots before. We'll have to see though.

It seems like an odd move to put Final Fantasy in Mario 3-on-3 Hoops.
Do you suppose this will become a new trend at Nintendo? First, we have Pac-Man in Mario Kart Arcade GP. Next, there's Snake and possibly a few more third-party characters in SSBB. Now we have Final Fantasy characters in this game.
I guess I'll wait until the game comes out before I judge whether this is good or bad, but I get a bad feeling about this.

Well, Mario Hoops is originally proposed by Square and is not related with Nintendo until they came up with the idea of making it a Mario game instead.
That's why I'm not surprised with this move at all.

Is anyone else hoping Fighter is in this game?
...with sword-chucks?

It seems to be the popular thing to do, for developers to share franchises and characters. Similar to most other media, the characters outgrow the games themselves, and so people have no problem not seeing a new Metal Gear game, for example. They just care about Solid Snake.
So it's not that weird to see FF characters, or for that matter Link in SCII, or Pacman in Mario Kart. It was a long time coming, now that video games have completely shifted away from "mascot" franchises and closer to the West. It's only more intelligent for Japanese developers to band together, you know?

Ah, good. There's already a thread about this game here.
Being in Europe, I don't have the game. I've never even played it. But a friend of mine in America tells me that a Bomb enemy from the FF series appears as an obstacle in the Bowser Castle court (or something). I thought it'd be more likely to be a Lava Bubble or Podoboo, but she insists it's an FF Bomb.
If it is, that counts as another cameo, right? And it doesn't appear to be on the site. Can someone who has the game confirm it?

If it is then it is. But being in Europe too, I also am Hoopsless.
A sorry state of affairs.

I don't have the game, but here's a quote from a guide from GameFAQs:
Bowser's Castle This court is inside of Bowser's Castle. Thowps, fireballs, and bombs from Final Fantasy all lurk on this court, watch out for all of them.
A second guide agrees with this description.
This is from another guide:
*Rainbow Road*
This stage is fairly random compared to the previous two. Fireballs will shoot up in random areas, and Bombs from Final Fantasy will roam around. Coming in contact with either will cause you to lose coins.
Take that as you will.

Did anyone know of these.....
There is a course called Marboal Gardens. Basiclly, its like Daisy's Garden, with a Marboral, that poisons people in the 3-point zone. You need a blue seen, but I forget how to get it.
'In Deep Blooper Sea, there are chest, or better yet, Mimics. They chase people with the ball, or somethimes fall apart with coins
There final course is Rainbow Ship. Its an Air Ship.
The credits have a song from FF. Not sure wich one though.
