After looking around the web, I noticed a lot of free gaming experences from independent (or in short "indie") designers/developers/programmers with big ideas going around. And of course some those games are even making their way onto consoles (World of Goo on WiiWare for example, was orignally the PC prototype Tower of Goo.) So in short here is a thread highlighting free small games but with big ideas. Some of these may not be browser based they may have to be downloaded. ROM CHECK FAIL! Just imagine playing SMB as Mario trying to stomp Goombas and then 5 seconds later you end up becoming Pac-Man! While the Goombas end up turning into the astroids from Astroids! And then another 5 seconds later you change again into other games! (I don't want to spoil the rest). Download it here.Off-Road Velociraptor Safari. This game involves driving a jeep around a valley trying to kill as many Velocirator, exporting dead raptors and pulling off stunts in a 5 minute period trying to get as many points as possible to submit to online leaderboards. This is in 3-D and works in your browser so you don't download it. This image is not the best one, there should be a video trailer for it somewhere. Play it here.Crayon Physics This game is about trying to collect stars with a red ball by drawing shapes, using them to reach the star. Download the game here.I'll try posting more games soon, but I'm go around trying to find/play them. Right now I'm playing Cave Story which is said to be a indie game masterpiece.

That last one looks like ideal for a DS game. I don't really download a lot of free online games. Except, you know, morally dubious ones for the purpose of information gathering

TIGSource and the IndieGames.com blog are great for finding indie games. And yes, Cave Story is awesome and everyone should play it. Download the game here and the English translation patch here. I'd like to recommend ikiki's games. Most of them are 2D platformers with a very steep difficulty curve. They're all in Japanese but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out what you have to do. Just click on one of the links in the list to download a game. You'll need a program capable of extracting lzh files, like WinRAR. Here are some details on some of the games. Teppodon and Nikujin in particular are a lot of fun.

(welp, double post) The full version of Noitu Love 2: Devolution was released today. You can buy it for twenty bucks or download the one-and-a-half-level demo. I haven't bought the full game yet but the demo is a blast. Fantastic old-school fun. It's a platformer/beat 'em up that's controlled with a combination of the keyboard and the mouse. You have to beat up robots and huge bosses and stuff. It's also pretty easy to rack up large combos which makes the game a lot of fun. Go to konjak.org to get the demo and/or buy the game. It is good.

I guess I should post one of the best free games ever posted on the internet. Within a Deep Forest Within a Deep Forest is a game where you play as a ball. You explore this peaceful world getting various upgrades and such. The graphics are simple, but the world and music are extremely vivid. I seriously recommend this game.

And yes, Cave Story is awesome and everyone should play it. Download the game here and the English translation patch here. I completed CS last week and it is an amazing game, I'm playing it again to get one of the other endings. I really like the powering down/weaking of you weapon when your character gets hit. It brings a real ballance to the game, compared to Metroid where you just get all the power ups and become a goddess (Samus is a women remember so I can't really say god) and destroy everything in your way while having all your weapons remain super powerful. I'm currently downloading Within a Deep Forest right now. If you are interesting in the upcoming WiiWare title World of Goo, you might want to play the prototype game that inspired it, Tower of Goo, but I recommend you may want to play Tower of Goo Unlimited instead.

YES, Deep Forest is an amazing game. Incredibly fun; sometimes frustrating, but fun and imaginative. The Knytt games are awesome as well, if you love just exploring huge worlds and simple platforming.

BUMP! Some more free/indie game goodness! Gang Garrison 2An 8-bit sidescrolling demake of Team Fortress 2 that has online multiplayer. All 9 classes from TF2 are playable and very well balanced. Ended up getting second place on TIGSource's demakes compettion. I would have posted about this game sooner but I wanted to wait when it had updated to a really good playable balanced state (for example in the original build, the engineer class, could not build turrets and was just useless but now he can). Official website Go there to download the game. Here's a trailer, the game has improved alot since then though. Any of you guys here, who download this want to play sometime? IjiIji is an action platformer which took Daniel Remar four years to make, where players assume control of the titular character as she learns how to cope with waking up to find her world taken over by an alien race. Guided by her brother who speaks through the research complex's loudspeaker system, she has to find a way to convince an alien leader to retreat and save humankind from total annihilation. Iji's skills can be upgraded by acquiring nanofields left behind by the aliens, then spent on cyborg stations to increase any of her seven basic stats. You can only acquire a maximum of five nano points per sector, and one nano point is awarded whenever your nano gauge reaches its limit. Progress is saved automatically after the completion of each Sector, but not before boss fights. This is also one of the very few games which offers multiple storyline paths in relation to how much the player resorts to violence when dealing with the adversities they face. There are ten sectors to play through in total, not inclusive of the secret level which can only be unlocked once certain requirements have been fulfilled. (Above text was copy/pasted from Indiegames.com). Here's the trailer and the download link.

I went through a phase where all I did was play indie games. Aye, how I miss the days when I had spare time to just blow paying these things... I hope they all get recognized for their ingenuity and start making it more often to consoles. I know games like N+ and Braid did that and are very successful because of it. Cave Story is the next big one. Ever think some others will make the jump?
Some favorites of mine are Lyle in Cube Sector, the Knytt games, and I Wanna Be the Guy. Those are classics.

I might check the raptor game in the OP just because the velociraptors in it have feathers. Featherless raptors = lame.

I believe the developers of that game were quite proud of themselves for adding the feathers to them and also the effects of hitting a raptor and seeing the feathers fly. They also made the game Jetpack Brontosaurus with "Brontosaurus ragdoll effects" and Minotaur Chinashop, a game about entrepreneurship and insurance fraud. Go here to play them. You will need the to have downloaded the Unity plugin to play the Raptor Safari and the other two games. Also here's some impressive footage. Also the game Iji was voted by viewers of Bytejacker, to the #1 free indie game of the year, so give it a shot and also download the 1.3 update that allows the game to be completed without killing anybody.

Brontosaurs never existed though. I'm surprised to see that they are being scientifically accurate with feathered raptors but not with replacing brontosaurs with apatosaurs.

Brontosaurs never existed though. I'm surprised to see that they are being scientifically accurate with feathered raptors but not with replacing brontosaurs with apatosaurs. Actually the game states that it's about the "splendid dreams of the Apatosaurus named Brontosaurus. Also another scientific note, the digital skeleton model of the Apatosaurus/Brontosaurus was checked out and approved by a paleontologist for accuracy to the real life skeleton. EDIT: After seeing Destructoid.com do an article about these, I might as well bring these 3 games up. They all share the theme of "games about games."
