A number of items from past Smash games appear in this one as well. But, of course, there are naturally many people who have never played any of those games. And even if you have, I still think I ought to explain these.
It’s not all of them, but I would like to introduce a few.<Beam Sword>It is a blade of light—the Beam Sword. This time it gets REALLY long!<Fire Flower>Hold down the button to release a fire burst!<Freezie>Throw it at someone to freeze them.<Home-Run Bat>Do a side-smash to hit a home run! This time, everyone has a different stance.<Party Ball>Items pour out from inside.<Super Mushroom>When you get the mushroom...You become gigantic! These are just some of the items that intensify the slapstick nature of this game. You must master them all!

Out of all items shown on this update, only one item is brand-new. The clock item... is that what I think it is? The Stop Watch from Super Mario Bros. 2? It would be sweet if it froze your opponents in time for a few seconds.

The original Zelda had a similar clock. I'm betting it's THAT clock.

Only timer I can name from the top of my head is Castlevania's Ofcourse that one looks very different so it's problably SMB2 yeah. Also I'm glad they get the old items out of the way with a big update like this. Sounds like there's going to be another one or two of these, but I was afraid they'd have single updates about 'Red Shell returning booyah!' to spread it out because of the delay.

This screenshot so reminds me of Star Wars/The Empire Strikes Back. Link: "Now the circle is complete. Once I was but a learner, now I am the Master". Fox: "Only a master of evil, Link."

Nice update and it also covers a lot of the items we saw at the recent press conference. This might not be much of a point to note out but you can really see how decreased in size Charizard is to Pikachu in the last shots. SSBB decreased size (looks odd when compared to Pikachu). SM/normal (Charizard) size (when compared to Pikachu).

I like how usually old items are secretly shown in other updates, then, in an 'old items' update, we get a NEW item secretly shown.
Well that wraps up the ridiculously long time without an item update. Bring on a character tomorrow.

I'm betting the Stopwatch is from SMUSA, and not Zelda. Even though they have pretty much the same effect. I expect freezing your opponents in mid air will be fun ;D

The original Zelda had a similar clock. I'm betting it's THAT clock. I thought about that, too.. but it being Mario's is more likely. Think about it... Except for the Party Ball, all the items shown in the screenshot with the clock were in Super Mario Bros. 2. Sakurai is likely cluing us in that the clock is a Mario item.

I like the different colored beam swords. Other than that, not much to say today.

The Zelda one was red, the Mario 2 one was gold. For all we know, it's like the barrel--a Smash original >.>

In Zelda, you had to just touch the clock to activate it. If that's how this clock works, it's from Zelda. If you have to physically pick it up, then it's from SMB2.
EDIT: Also remember that he SMB2 clock was changed from gold to blue in SM All-Stars. The clock in that screen up there is clearly a silvery blue color. Just some food for thought.

The SMUSA sprite was gold, but check the official artwork for it in the Super Mario All-Stars manual. It is blue! I don't have the Super Mario Advance manual to hand, so I can't check that.
