Look what I found. The most important characters in Melee that we're not playable, were just shown as tropies. But in Brawl most of those important, non playable trophies turned out playable. Let me show you what I am saying: Lakitu is an AT. Bullet Bill is in Brawl still. Now to the characters... Playable. Playable. Playable. Get what I'm saying? So why am I saying this? "We already knew this" you might say...well... Ridley had a trophie: And so did these characters: So Tom Nook, Olimar, K Rool and many others could be payable from this idea...what do you think?

Well, out of the hundreds of trophies in Melee, I would expect some to be playable

That's Banzai Bill, not Bullet Bill. Banzai Bill was the giant Bullet Bill that came from Super Mario World. It was an environmental hazard of the Peach's Castle stage. I doubt Tom Nook would be playable, because he is part of the Smashville stage. I believe the Animal Crossing protagonist will be playable, because if the stage is named after something Super Smash Bros. related, then the Animal Crossing protagonist can be named something like "Smasher" or "Smash Brother/Smash Sister". If Tom Nook does become playable, posting an offending picture of Tom Nook in SSBB with your words saying "Tom Nook says you fail!" won't bother me at all.

Pit and I think Dedede were supposed to be playable in SB64. Meta Knight was supposed to be in SSBM but they couldn't work out the flight physics. Pit was considered but the retro spot went to the Ice Climbers. Dedede was because of time constraints. So those three are perhaps bad examples.

It makes perfect sense to make characters that were ordinary trophies in Melee into Assists in Brawl. We do have SNES Andross and Dr. Wright, you know.

This logic sounds like simply saying "important characters deserve to be in Brawl". It's clear that important characters needed to become trophies in Melee, or otherwise it wouldn't have been a good library of Nintendo knowledge (and yet the likes of Diddy Kong and Little Mac didn't get a trophy in Melee).
Pit deserved to be in since the first SSB game IMO.

I heard that Diddy and Little Mac would have trophies in Melee, but you know not enough time.

I did always think it was very bizarre that Dixie made a trophy appearance in Melee, and Diddy made no appearance at all. That's why I was surprised when he showed up playable for Brawl. I'd figured Sakurai didn't like him, or something.

Alright, let's clear the air.
First: the original SSB was meant to have Dedede, Peach, Bowser, Mewtwo, a Fire Emblem rep, and Pit. It was touted as a Mario fighter until Sakurai wanted to include non-Mario characters, but found it difficult to beef the roster up considering the limits of the N64.
Second: Melee was meant to include those six fighters plus Meta Knight, Wario, and an undetermined "Famicom" rep. Famicom refers to the years before the Famicom Disk System, basically anything from Donkey Kong to Super Mario Bros. So it was a battle between Ice Climber, Urban Champion, Excitebike, Mach Rider, and Balloon Fight.
Third: Famicom Disk System includes Link, Samus, Pit, and a few others. Pit is NOT a retro character. How hard is that to understand? It was just a dropped series, but NOT retro. Christ.
Fourth: Diddy WAS a trophy planned for Melee, from what I've heard, as were Punch-Out trophies. However the GCN disc can only hold so much and Sakurai held back on a lot of the trophies he wanted to include, picking the best for the game.
Fifth: Takamaru and Sukapon were considered for Melee, but dropped due to "well, they just aren't well-known enough" reasoning
Sixth: That's... about it. The trophies are coincidental, not affirming, of character appearances in the game. Lakitu's a pretty well-known and essential Mario enemy. Just because he appears doesn't mean that it's a reference to the trophy. Lakitu's just a popular enemy. That's all. Same goes for any of those cases that made it into a Smash game.
As for Ridley, Olimar, Tom Nook, and K. Rool: using your logic, yes. That works. But using the refined logic that it's just a coincidence, it's another reach for fanboy favorites. Personally, and this is JUST my opinion, any of those four would be poor additions to the roster. Especially if picked over more original characters for the game. I can see Tom Nook being fairly unique, but if the more popular suggestion so far is AC Villager...
Regardless, no. Just no.

Diddy Kong also appeared in the artworks used for Nintendo GameCube skins by Gamer Graffix. Here he appears along with the Melee roster plus classic Wario, Toad, a 1-Up Mushroom, and a Yoshi Egg:

I wonder why they replaced the Melee renders with the less-than-stellar N64 renders?

I had that skin. Nintendo didn't make it, it was by some third party thing that sucks.
Take that how you will, but that's probably the issue right there.
