Here is another preview from G4, once again saying that Muramasa stole the show at E3. Amidst the fanfare of Nintendo’s press conference at E3, the company took the time to highlight some mature-geared third-party titles. Unfortunately, Muramasa: The Demon Blade didn’t make the cut for the big Tuesday. Not to take away from the likes of The Conduit or Dead Space Extraction, but that’s a real shame. Muramasa is, without a doubt, one of the best titles I saw on display at the show.
. . .
Although my time with Muramasa: The Demon Blade was rather brief, I was more impressed with it than any other game I saw for Wii during E3. During a press conference in which Nintendo did its best to appease its loyal fanbase, one of the most hardcore games on the console came from an unlikely source. Hopefully, we’ll all be richer for it when the game comes out. And here is what the North American box art will look like.

Siliconera has an interview with Shane Bettenhausen in which he talks about the localization of Muramasa. The game will keep the original Japanese voice acting and only have English subtitles. He said the reason for this is because the game is so firmly rooted in Japanese culture and mythology that trying to Westernize it would be a disservice. He also mentions that Vanillaware created new art to help promote the game in Western regions.

4-hit combo!!!! In case anyone is interested, if you pre-order Muramasa from GameStop (and possibly other places), you'll get this really cool wall scroll filled with artwork as a bonus.

I've heard reviews of the Japanese version of the game. From what's said, this one is a very outstanding game with nice story. Needless to say, the use of high-quality 2D art on Wii is a warm welcome.
And thanks for breaking the combo, Combo. =D (Still like your old name better, though)

Here is a good preview from X-Play. Adam likens the game to Viewtiful Joe. Shane Bettenhausen makes an interesting point about how kids growing up on today's 3D games probably aren't familiar with what a good 2D game can be like. I'm not sure that's true with things like Xbox Live Arcade and the Virtual Console, but I hope that Muramasa and A Boy and His Blob are able to make a case for 2D console games.

Here is about 13 minutes of gameplay footage with commentary by Shane Bettenhausen. It's pretty interesting and includes a boss fight.

Muramasa was just featured on 1up's Game Night. They compare it with Odin Sphere a lot, but really seem to prefer Muramasa much more. Part 1Part 2So, there's this, Spyborgs, Scribblenauts, and even Dead Space: Extraction all coming out in September. Why do all the good games come out at once? I guess that's a better problem than nothing good coming out at all.

Is it sad that I had no interest in this game until seeing this page? XD Anyways, this is looking pretty dang solid. I'd buy it on the release date if there weren't SOOOOOOOO many games I still need to play.

Odin Sphere comparisons are not proofs of excellence. XD But from what I've seen, Muramasa has overcome Odin Sphere's combat flubs. Enemies react when you hit them. Combos are important! And so on. So I definitely would love to give it a shot. Alas, I has no moneys. It's out next week, too. Agony! XD

XD Actually, if you watch the videos, you'll see that their comparisons to Odin Sphere are only to say how much better Muramasa is. They didn't seem totally satisfied with Odin Sphere either. They thought the combat flowed and controlled really well. They pointed out that the combo system is really deep and versatile. Jeremy Parish thought that traversing the levels was a lot less tedious than Odin Sphere. And, of course, they point out that it's not plagued with slowdown like Odin Sphere.

Good. All good things. I will check them out tomorrow, more than likely. Dial-up is too slow. The clips I've watched recently have been very positive looking to me, and the combo system does look deep, too. And for some reason, Parish's opinion manages to sync with mine some of the time, so I'm more prone to agree with some of his comments than others. Again, all good. I'd sell some things to come up with the cash, but I don't know if I want to sell a ton of games I'm either on the fence about or haven't played to do that...

I picked up the game yesterday ($30 is more my speed), and so far, I'm digging this game a lot. The combat is so far beyond Odin Sphere's clunky mess that it's quite impressive. The environments are gorgeous and more diversified than OS, and the story is quite interesting thus far (I'm playing as Momohima, I think that's how her name goes). Nice work with the JP-only choice, too. If only I didn't have a test to study...I'd have played it more this morning.
