You're right. Question is, when SMB1 came out, how can people connect Mario with the "hero who saved Pauline from Donkey Kong"? To me, they don't have the same colour scheme - they don't even have the same build. DKAC Mario is just like a "generic overall-wearing guy" to me. I didn't even know that is Mario in DK94 until once I stared at the title screen for too long and the animation showed up. Mario is chosen by Nintendo because the game is a continuation - this I understand, Fry, after you explained. But if they didn't use Mario? I personally do think the charm of SMB1 far outweighs that of DKAC, DKJr and MBAC. On the subject of Jumpman... It's easier to identify with a more clearly defined character, but Donkey Kong was a success with Jumpman in the leading role... so he could have kept the name over time. One has to wonder how history would be different: - Donkey Kong - Donkey Kong Jr. - Jumpman & Bumpman - Jumpman's Big Adventure Jumpman probably wouldn't be Italian and so Charles Martinet would continue being obscure. It's difficult to imagine a world where so prominent a fictional character was different in some way. LOL, Bumpman. "Mario " is far easier to pronounce than "Jumpman". One reason to make Mario's name widespread, if you ask me. Naming is important. A lot of things today can be different if the past isn't the same. For example: No LEGO --> No passion for Jonathan Gay --> No Flash --> No Web 2.0 Heck, a random kid could have been hurt from rolling down an elevator if I wasn't born and thus wasn't there to stop that kid.

He appears on the game box and cartridge I like the idea of Jumpman & Bumpman now. Bumpman's Ghoulish Adventure was an excellent launch title for the Gamecube, dontcha think? Not as good as Jumpman's Island Adventure. But the spinoffs were always better. Grumpman's Pirate Adventure and (of course) Lickosaurus Island.

Yeah... same here. YL... how did you not know? He appears on the game box and cartridge Not to sound like a racist, but non-Japan Asia really is full of piracy. How am I supposed to know what official artwork looks like when I was playing a pirated copy of DK94 (not mine)? I didn't have Internet access at age 5. (Started fiddling with computers since 5, had my own at 8, had Internet access at 9, changed to broadband at 12) I like the idea of Jumpman & Bumpman now. Bumpman's Ghoulish Adventure was an excellent launch title for the Gamecube, dontcha think? Not as good as Jumpman's Island Adventure. But the spinoffs were always better. Grumpman's Pirate Adventure and (of course) Lickosaurus Island. None reminds me of Mario of its current style. Perhaps except Wario, which looks half-cute horrible anyway. Don't forget The Lady's Melodramatic Adventure! "The Lady" reminds me of a certain non-Peach...

"The Lady" reminds me of a certain non-Peach... What do you suggest, then? Ms. Jumpman? That'll never catch on. But seriously, YL... you couldn't tell this was Mario?

...Faulty memory, I guess. I still recall not finding the relationship between Mario and himself before seeing the title animation.
...Let's assume I didn't pause. I did tell it from the pause screen.
...Parawoman, named after her parasol?

To keep up with the naming they'd probably come up with a different name for her by Jumpman and the Door of Dreams. Possibly "Pink Lady," and so when we reach Jumpman and the Alien we'd have "Yellow Lady," since Pink Lady would have been canonized as the Lady from Donkey Kong, Jumpman's Big Adventure, and Jumpman and the Door of Dreams. Alternatively, Bumpman would be rescuing his own Lady from the clutches of the Ghost King and his Shellking-mech (as named by Fryguy in the next post I AM PSYCHIC) in Bumpman's Ghoulish Adventure rather than Jumpman. And, of course, Grumpman would have jacked Shellcreeper's kart from Super Jumpman Racing for Jumpman Racing Grand Prix. And I would hate to see Grumpman show up in Mushman's Forest.

I still love Jump & Bump RPG and Jump & Bump RPG 2: Jumpboy & Bumpboy. Looking forward to Jump & Bump 3: Shellking's Big Adventure.
(Because, of course, Koopa Troopas would still be called Shellcreepers, and so their leader would be Shellking, see? A rich tapestry).

You guys have essentially concocted an entire parallel timeline. Absolutely fucking brilliant. ;D

I don't know. I still think Miyamoto was leaning towards having the Kongs being the stars. After all, who was the hero in Donkey Kong Jr?
If I remember correctly Miyamoto had planned another Donkey Kong game where you could play as Donkey Kong against the evil carpenter. I believe it was called "Return of Donkey Kong"

I played the ROM of that game. For some reason the second mode is more likely to work than the first, and I still don't even know what the difference is.

I do like Rare's redesign of Donkey Kong Jr. in Donkey Kong's Big Adventure & Donkey Kong's Big Adventure 2: Junior's Huge Quest
But I'm anticipating Jumpman's New Big Adventure 2 (Yay! The Shellprinces are back!) and Jumpman's Space Adventure 2 (Loved Jumpman's Space Adventure)
