Oh one level, it makes sense as a kind of demo game, but still... it would be nice if Nintendo just stepped up and did regular DLC.

Depending on what kind of DLC that is.
If the only thing that download does is to unlock something already in the game's coding, that will only boost sales of hacking devices.
And if it's normal DLC, paid ones are unfair to those regions not selling Nintendo Point Cards, and free ones still have a problem dealing with the memory of Wii.
Nintendo, the used-to-be king of compression... please do something about it!

DLC is a two-sided sword, really. I like the idea of DLC that is used to add something the developers were unable to add during development or is something highly requested by the fanbase. What I don't like is when developers launch a game WITH DLC that already exists. There's no reason that such DLC shouldn't already be in the game, but instead it's used to pad the price of the game.
But I think a lot of developers have their DLC done well in advance and just release it bit by bit so they get additional money from the original purchase of the game (which is particularly egregious given DLC is the forte of 60 dollar 360/PS3 games) . Or even worse, have the DLC already in the game. A particularly nasty offender of this was Soul Calibur IV and the 'exclusive' Star Wars characters in each one... that only stayed exclusive for awhile until you shelled out ten bucks.

If anything, I'd say free DLC is a better idea for existing games. Like the WarioWare DIY microgames.
If it's not free, it better be a new, independent game.

This is technically a free DLC. You buy it with the invisible free "points" that Nintendo gives you when you buy a Nintendo game. And you get to punch Doc Louis! How is that not worthwhile?!

Problem of DLC, I said it, is that (1) it makes everyone's game not really equal, (2) Wii's got 2163 blocks of memory and I've already used up about 600 of those lovely blocks. Wii games read from Wii's internal memory, so goes with DLC, so you can't move things to an SD card and call it a day. DLC... I think those take some 40~100 blocks depending on contents, no? Get yourself 20 of those DLC-enabled games and you're doomed. This is technically a free DLC. You buy it with the invisible free "points" that Nintendo gives you when you buy a Nintendo game. And you get to punch Doc Louis! How is that not worthwhile?! The cost is the Mario hat. Have you not studied economics?

That would be the case if this was DLC. However this game is an independent Wii Channel, thereby you can place it on the SD card.

The cost is the Mario hat. Have you not studied economics? That's not a "cost". That's a "gamble". Do you go for the hat, which will offer you literally seconds of fun? Or do you opt for punching Doc Louis, which will keep you occupied for a few minutes? Doesn't cost you anything, but you have to CHOOSE! Dun dun duuuun!

Shame it wasn't on the original. If I was to get the choice I'd pick the tangible item. I could easily watch this on Youtube... even though I'd love to fight my favorite Punch Out character ever.
This little game will be 50% less badass if "Gonna Fly Now" or "Eye of the Tiger" aren't background tunes.
