The comparison between DIC's King Koopa and Wart makes me wonder if it has something to do with that crazy Kerog thing (because of "kero-").
It always annoyed me that Bowser's look was kept like that all the way until the Super Mario World show. But then again they also kept the colors on the Bros.' suits and Peach's hair, so was just part of the continuity.

Captain N had it even worse. What's your word on that? My word on Captain N is... "Cockpiss".

Luigi is taller and skinnier than Mario, which wasn't officially laid down until the 1986 redesigns (official artwork of him before that is just a different coloured Mario). Was Luigi already redesigned with The Lost Levels (Bros. 2 in Japan) or was Bros. 2 (USA in Japan) the first game with tall Luigi? Actually, I've hardly seen artwork of Super Mario Bros. era Luigi prior to Bros. 2. He is even the only main character who is not seen in the original SMB box art, and he is also absent from the various scene artwork of this time. Luigi was really neglected. By the way, have you seen the very, very old concept art for Arcade Donkey Kong? It's available at this blog (scroll down). At first I was a bit sceptical if it was real (you know, everything can be faked in the Internet), but then I saw a photo at Nintendo.co.jp, which confirmed that it is true.

Super Mario Bros 2 was the first game with a tall Luigi in it, but he was redesigned along with all the other characters for SMB:TLL. I believe there's artwork to confirm this.
If you're in any doubt, he also appears on the boxart of 3D Hot Rally, which was released months before SMB2's American release.

Still would like to see the original artwork of tall Luigi, though. I browsed a bit at the Japanese fan site All Super Mario, but what I found is another early design of Princess Peach here (3rd row, 2nd column). Images at the site are mostly small, though, but I've also seen Japanese fansites without any copyrighted images.

That's not official artwork, that's merchandise, and most likely been drawn by an artist outside of Nintendo. I'm not entirely sure if the following artwork was for Super Mario Bros. 2 or the later SMAS release (the Mushroom seems to suggest it's for the All-Stars version, although it wouldn't be the first time that official artwork has been adopted by into the main games of the series). www.gamehiker.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=70&pos=12

The owner of All Super Mario actually wrote about this very matter in his former blog. Sadly, all the images that would clarify it are gone. There are only tiny thumbs at Google which will probably disappear within the next weeks. Link to the blog entry: blog.livedoor.jp/a_suma/archives/51195584.htmlHe tells that the most notable early use of thin Luigi was for the 3D Hot Rally artwork (and annotes that Luigi seems to have six fingers on the game's cover). I don't really understand what the crappy online translation says about the Luigi artwork in the Lost Levels manual. Then he says that Luigi was already taller than Mario in the Super Mario Bros. anime film. And something more about the Lost Levels manual and Yoichi Kotabe's art, but anyway, without the pictures and that bad translation I still don't really know. By the way, here are large scans of a 3D Hot Rally flyer with some artwork of Luigi: gamedic.jpn.org/museum/tirasi/FCSPT/

I KNEW the Super Mario Peach-hime anime was the start of many trends in future Mario lore, and Luigi's height was one of them!

Actually I'm not sure on that, since I don't understand the translation's part on the Lost Levels instruction booklet. We'd just need that manual to check. Everybody here must have one for sure.

Hmm, seems to be saying that Luigi appeared in the Lost Levels manual, but used the same picture as Mario to show his abilities. Kikai also says that tall Luigi appeared on merchandise in 1987, but in the Peach Hime colour scheme... which suggests he wasn't actually redesigned until later. I hate not being able to speak Japanese
