NinDB: YuuyuukiThe sort-of sequel to Shin Onigashima is an adventure game based on the story "Saiyuki" (Journey to the West). Goku the Monkey King must travel the world and make friends in order to prevent his old accomplice, Gyumao the Bull, from taking over the world. GamesSeries Overview- A series introduction has been written. YuuyuukiSystem: Famicom Disk System - Story and gameplay is written. - Required: A complete game guide from start to finish with screenshots. Will include a character guide as well. CameosKirby's Dream Land 2 (JP Version)When you rescue the same Animal Friend as the one you are riding, you will meet Gooey. On rare occasions you will meet a female Gooey. She rewards you with an extra life and you need to meet her at least once to get the maximum completion percentage. This female Gooey does not appear in the Japanese version. Instead you rescue Chao, the female hero of Yuuyuuki. The Sound Test scene is also a scene from Yuuyuuki. This scene appears in the US/European version, but Gooey and female Gooey appear in place of Chao on the piano. Kirby's Dream Land 3At the end of Grassland stage 4 you will find Chao, the female protagonist from Yuuyuuki. To earn her Heart Star you must use the Rock ability earlier in the level to find the fire miniboss and defeat him to find Goku, the hero of Yuuyuuki. This time, when you reach Chao, Goku will have joined her, and the Heart Star will be yours. Great Concert! I'm falling in love with this game and its bizarre characters. A quick synopsis so far: Chapter 1Meet Chao. While reading a book, a meteorite falls in the forest near her home. She rushes out to extinguish the burning rock and a monkey breaks free of it. The monkey is only able to communicate with grunts and monkey noises, but Chao befriends him and names him Goku. While out doing chores, Goku spots a mysterious peach sitting in the meteor. When he picks it up, a mysterious being appears before him. Chao rushes to the scene just in time to see Goku dragged off into heaven by the Oshakasama. The God imprisons Goku for his past crimes. While he sits in a rocky prison, he eats the peach. Suddenly the memories of the past, and his voice, come back to him. Meanwhile, Chao prays to the Oshakasama to take care of her new friend. Chapter 2A uncouth, cowardly priest named Senzo escapes from a demon invasion of his village. His only option is to cross the desert on his trusty scooter. While lost in the desert he finds a sealed cave with a monkey imprisoned inside. He tries to ignore it but crashes. He listens to the monkey's plight and frees him by reading an inscription on the cave. The Oshakasama instructs Senzo to watch over his new charge. Fearful that this prisoner might be violent, Senzo places a golden headband on Goku's head that allows him to cast an imprisoning spell that will shock Goku into submission. Goku follows Senzo across the desert and sees a mirage in the sun, of Chao talking to an elderly lady. Goku and Senzo arrive at a village and visit an old restaurant with a surly pig for a proprieter. After ordering food, the proprieter reveals himself to be a pig demon called Hakkai and Goku fights him on the rooftops. Senzo casts the imprisoning spell to stop the fighting and Goku falls to the ground. When he wakes up, he and Senzo are running from the village, but the Senzo he is with is the shapeshifting Hakkai. Goku suspects something is wrong, and without the imprisoning spell, the fake Senzo can't stop Goku from attacking him. They free the real Senzo and Hakkai agrees to join them on their journey. Chapter 3After climbing a misty mountain, the three travellers come across a confused Panda. Hakkai uses his precognitive ability to find a hole in the ground that leads to Onna Village, the village of women. They head for the bathhouse, and Senzo decides to take a peek behind a curtain - but is greeted by a man! He takes them to the castle where he reveals himself to be a kappa called Gojo, and passes the group on to two evil thugs called Kingaku and Gingaku. They play a fast-paced quiz game with the group, but are defeated. Gojo, dissatisfied with his work, joins the group. Chapter 4While continuing their journey West, the four come across a ship and decide that it would be a quicker way to travel to India. They try to get on board, but are refused entry without a ticket. They then try to sneak on board by having Hakkai transform himself into a ticket, but then this also fails. They try to buy a ticket from the local shop, but the man is too broken down to help them. Gojo uses his mind-reading ability to work out the problem, and sends Senzo to speak to the man's lover, Linlin. (There is a word game that follows, and I haven't finished translating it yet). They get the tickets and board the ship. Chapter 5The four board the ship and have a look around, but a small, bratty thief called the Kougaiji Kid steals Senzo's crown and runs off. The team splits up to find him. Hakkai gets distracted in the kitchens eating all the food, Gojo searches high and low in the engine room, while Goku investigates the captain's room. Goku notices something is up with the captain and hits him, breaking the Kougaiji Kid's transformation spell. He runs off to the dining room where Hakkai punches him for getting in the way of his food, and runs off again. Goku joins Gojo in the engine room and takes another look at the engines, where he finds another Gojo tied up. He hits the fake Gojo and the Kougaiji Kid gives up Senzo's crown. With the crown returned, the four go to the lounge for a drink. Senzo takes an interest in the cute piano player, but gets shot down. When Goku goes over, it turns out to be Chao! They talk, but get interrupted by the Kougaiji Kid, singing badly on the microphone. They all try to stop him, but Goku takes it. In a rage, the Kougaiji Kid smashes through the side of the ship, causing it to start sinking. Goku gives chase while the other four escape (thanks to Gojo's amphibious abilities). Goku fights the Kougaiji Kid underwater, and when he surfaces a massive water cyclone is destroying what remains of the ship. Chao manages to swim over to him and hand him the Golden Mallet that she has been searching for, but they are separated and Goku is swept into the cyclone. End of Disk 1Chapter 6Goku wakes up lost in the middle of Siberia. He wanders aimlessly until he finds a man resting in an ice pool. He tries to talk to him but instead the man fights Goku, enraged by some past activity. Overpowered by this mysterious man, Goku is left to wander in the blizzard, remembering his past as an accomplice of the bull demon Gyumao as they waged war on the gods. He then remembers his friends and loses consciousness. When he wakes up, he is in a bed being watched over by a friendly old couple. He thanks them for their hospitality and sets off to make amends with the man he fought. He helps a fisherman break the ice, talks to a woman about the fisherman, and befriends a fox long enough to follow him into a dark cave. The fox leads him to the peak of the mountain where the fighting man turns out to be a cloud god known as Kumojijii. Goku tries to complement him on his cloud, but a fight breaks out again and Goku falls down the mountain. In his frustration he hits a snowman, but it doesn't fall apart. He decides to return to the elderly couple's house, but the snowman follows him and reveals himself to be Gojo! Reunited, they find a bracelet in the fisherman's things and return to the top of the mountain. They try to give it to Kumojijii, but he refuses to acknowledge them. When Goku gives it to his fox, it turns out to be a very important item. Kumojijii is so impressed by their find that he lets them take his flying cloud. Chapter 7Goku and Gojo fly towards Hawaii... and this is as far as I have gotten so far. ............. So anyone else actually interested in this game yet?

Gee... Maybe I'll try this out, but wonder how I can still play this? I know you made a good job at translating, but I wonder how I'm still able to play this as it's a text-based game. (-ll-)

Having the walkthrough in Japanese in front of me certainly helps a bit. However, it's in Kanji rather than the Katakana used throughout the game - which is why I'm translating the guide as I go through into both Katakana and English so everybody can play through the game.
Adventure Island also has guides for Shin Onigashima (including a text dump of sorts), Heisei Era: Shin Onigashima, Famicom Detective Club 1 & 2, Time Twist and Forest of Beginnings.
They're games I've always wanted to play through but you can spend hours clicking every meaningless option until you get the right one.
While you don't exactly understand everything that's going on, you pick up enough.

Well you certainly make it sound interesting, but I'm not gonna select random options for over an hour to get to the next chapter. I shall await your English guide

I tried that the first time. There's a bit at the end of Chapter 3 where even if you did know what was going on (Japanese and corrupt graphics notwithstanding), you can still get stuck by the fast pace of the quiz. Answers have to be given in 2 seconds, and if you get too many wrong, that character gets kicked out. If they all get kicked out then the game ends and you go back to the start of the chapter. I slowed down the emulation speed, even with the answers in front of me

Damn, turns out Chapter 8 is also corrupted Edit: Which is doubly annoying because Chao is in a prison cell with characters called "Kintaro", "Donbe" and "Tengu" (all Shin Onigashima characters, with the bit of odd music from Shin Onigashima also being played)... but their sprites are just a hodgepodge of other characters chopped up. It's surely a cameo... but damned if I can prove it here!!

Several things to confirm here: Chapters 3 and 8 are NOT corrupt if you use the emulator NNNesterJ. The whole game plays just fine in this. Which means... I have confirmed the Shin Onigashima cameos in Yuuyuuki! A cameo so well hidden, only one emulator seems to show it...

Damn, Fry...you're whoopin' some serious ass on this one. I too have tried to play this game before and just couldn't muster the random option clicking. Looks like your English guide is going to do the world a huge favor.

I finished Yuuyuuki! And thus the guide, too, is finished. I will format it and put it up tomorrow, I expect. I already double checked the majority of it as well in order to get back to Chapter 8 in a different emulator! At a pace like that, I'm wondering how quickly I can get through a few more of these! I think Shin Onigashima deserves to be next

Interesting... (-lwl-) FryGuy, KUDOS TO YOU! I'm so impressed how you did the work down pal! I'll actually go get Yuuyuuki,- and I'm sure that Chao & Goku also appreciate this work of yours, even that they didn't wait this translation to happen... I have (unfortunately) Shin Onigashima's second disc for some odd reason- I'll try to find the first. (-''-)

I am trying to make this guide as comprehensive as I can, which is why it's taking a little longer. It's quite good actually. With a handful of translation tools by my side, I am getting a much better insight into the story.
Does anybody know anything about text dumping?

I've found this site: Maybe you'll find something there. I've heard that text dumping is done by using a hex editor- But I wonder does that apply to FDS-roms. (-ll-)
