INDIE WORLD + PARTNER SHOWCASE: August 27

nocturnal YL: Like a lot of other ARPGs, a difference in a few levels can completely turn tides. This game is not particularly grind-y, but it still feels like a lot of busywork. There's also grinding for particular materials. It's not particularly bad though. Aug 25, 2024 9:01:54 GMT -5 *
nocturnal YL: I just realised that we got a Nintendo Direct that's not a huge SQUARE ENIX ad. That's very surprising. Aug 27, 2024 10:17:32 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: Just finished Shining Resonance Refrain. Can't think of anything special to say about it right now; it's an enjoyable game that doesn't stand out. I'm also thinking about changing my plans on what to play next. Aug 29, 2024 13:19:21 GMT -5
Nester the Lark: OK, I admit it, I bought a fighting game. A bunch of King of Fighters games have gone on sale because it's the series' 30th anniversary, so I got KoF13 because I always wanted to try it. Aug 30, 2024 9:23:31 GMT -5
Nester the Lark: Andrew Greenberg, co-creator of the hugely influential Wizardry series, has passed away. Aug 31, 2024 17:43:41 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: Crazy coincidence there.
PlayStation: We're taking Concord offline.
Nintendo: Greetings from Concordia!

Nester the Lark: Apparently, Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo was just as surprised as everyone else to see Trails in the Sky the 1st revealed in the Direct. Sept 6, 2024 18:54:29 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: Alright, change of plan: I'm going to play Ys X first. Why? Because I want to play it before its overseas release. And if I'm playing that, I may as well get to Felghana afterwards. My plan to play unfamiliar games has to wait once again. Sept 8, 2024 10:05:52 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: And on that note, in the last week I've been playing Project DIVA Mega Mix, as I usually do whenever I'm not sure what to play. My skill got rusty from more than a year of not playing. Took me a few tries to perfect a single ★8 song. Sept 8, 2024 10:08:49 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: Early impression of Ys X is pretty good. There is UI indicating which NPC has new things to say, shared experience (granted, there are only 2 playable characters this time), and the field control is a lot better than Ys VIII and Ys IX. Sept 8, 2024 13:35:12 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: Got to the beginning of the sailing section. So far the whole thing feels a lot like Ys VIII and IX (with better control and UI), with fast-paced action and easy defensive options, nuanced politics, and Adol too happy about getting his plans interrupted. Sept 9, 2024 12:24:02 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: It's not as different as I thought. The overall feel is still like Ys IX, with the wire action (ZL button) being just an extension of what Ys IX had. It also has the same sound effects and map system. Small things like this make it scream modified Ys IX. Sept 9, 2024 12:32:13 GMT -5 *
nocturnal YL: PS5 Pro price revealed to be $700 is the US, €800 (US$884) in Europe, ¥119980 (US$847) in Japan and £700 (US$916) in the UK. Seriously!? Sept 11, 2024 6:52:30 GMT -5
Nester the Lark: All of the reactions I've seen so far boil down to the high price not being worth the small upgrade, it's digital-only without an expensive add-on, and Sony didn't even show any new games for it. Sept 11, 2024 10:51:42 GMT -5 *
nocturnal YL: Got to Part IV in Ys X. Sailing is very slow and I can't quite get used to it yet. That and the on-and-off voice acting are the only real complaints I have so far; everything else is good. Sept 11, 2024 14:02:31 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: Adol getting excited whenever he learns about hidden treasure is so adorable. It's very childlike and innocent, which is quite a contrast with the dangerous and politically compliated world he's in. Sept 14, 2024 9:33:14 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: The sailing gets better after leaving the first area. On the other hand, maybe it's just my setup, but the music so far is not what I expected, in a disappointing way. Maybe it's just because I've barely started? Sept 14, 2024 9:35:07 GMT -5
Nester the Lark: ^ I've heard some complaints that the music in recent Falcom games hasn't lived up to previous standards, attributed to the fact that the more talented composers have since left the company. Sept 14, 2024 13:04:38 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: I'm at Part IX now, which is pretty close to the end. It's a very positive experience so far; I especially like how the story unfolds. I generally like the latter half of the game better, although that's something I say for most story-driven games. Sept 18, 2024 10:41:33 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: And speaking of the story, I used to think basing the story setting on real life is a way to get around needing to be creative, but it does have a less obvious benefit: letting new players know what the story is up to without a huge lore dump. Sept 18, 2024 10:51:05 GMT -5
