How'd we go this long without a thread? Anywho, Have some Iwata Asks.highlights include: - Miyamoto didn't like the Gold Block powerup at first. For an interesting reason, at that.
- The name was originally going to have Gold in the title.
- The DLC levels were inspired by eWorld from SMBA4.(!)
- There is a new Boo called Boohemoth. Which is an incredible name.

Eh, undead forms of the Mario 1 enemies are a staple at this point. I'm just surprised its taken this long to get a proper Dry Goomba and Piranha.
2 things I like about those: The Goomba has the underground Goomba pallete, and the holes in the Piranha Plant. Creepy.

Just a heads up, the game is out in Japan now. Not much new to add, save for the strange fact that there are five normal worlds and three bonus worlds.

I think you mean six normal worlds.

Apparently, the idea of branching paths with the worlds from NSMB DS has returned.

I can't say I'm completely happy with the direction Nintendo is bringing their franchises these days.

Why? They've done just fine with some of them, honestly. Sure, there were others that weren't as hot, but we've been through quite a franchise renaissance these past few years.
KI Uprising, DKC Returns, Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Zelda Skyward Sword...To name a few.
In which case, haven't you ever been so satisfied with a game/franchise that you feel that you didn't need more?

My bad I should have been more specific. I'm not happy with the direction Nintendo EAD is bringing their franchises these days.
KI Uprising, DKC Returns, Kirby's Return to Dream Land... those guys were nice and fine but look who made them.
Ahem. Specifically I'm not happy with the DIRECTION Mario and Zelda are going in.
Note the word "direction" meaning I'm still at a point where I'm happy enough with their games but if they keep going down this path I'm gonna be upset.
I really liked Skyward Sword but I can't say I was happy with the elimination of an actual overworld, decrease in exploration, and increase of linear gameplay. Reading the interviews this was all done on purpose to make things more "convenient" for the player at the cost of a fleshed out world. And I hear tell they want to continue to make these kind of changes in the future which will really put me off.
Mario, let me be honest, I was not a big Mario fan in the beginning. It was only until the N64 era when Mario's world started to get more fleshed out I became a huge fan. I loved Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. Those are two of my favorite Mario games. Then came Galaxy. It almost felt like a step backwards to me. 3D Mario was becoming more like his linear 2D counterpart. I still loved Galaxy... I just don't like the idea that this is how they are going to do Mario from now on.
But what bothers me most of all is that these "New" series is becoming the most plentiful Mario series. I don't mind them here and there but now it's everywhere all the time!
I guess reading these Iwata Asks and seeing how satisfied they are with what they are doing and hoping to go even further in the future makes me incredibly fearful for what I used to love.

OMG! The nerve wrecking DLC levels are just as hard, if not harder than, as the Special levels (Tubular, Outrageous) from Super Mario World and those Extra levels (Hit That Switch!!, Kamek's Revenge) from Yoshi's Island.

With me, I disagree with Koops with regards to Mario, preferring this more linear series at least in direction, though not in execution, to the more exploratory 3D series. With regards to Zelda, though, I agree. Mario always felt better to me with more focus on your goal, while Zelda always felt better to me when I could roam and explore. Skyward Sword, yes, was a fun game, but it felt too linear for a Zelda game. Mario 64, yes, was a fun game, but it felt too exploratory for a Mario game. As I've already elaborated on my views on New SMB, I won't do so again here.
What I will say is this, though: I do not want to see Gold Mario again. It takes a steely heart to keep the golden touch and Mario has yet to show that to be who he is.

Recently released mini Nintendo direct has revealed the 2nd set of DLC for SMB2, now it's based of old SMB and SMB 3 levels. Good news is that to celebrate 300 billion coins collected, it will be a limited time free DLC pack (from 27/11 to 31/1 in Japan) Levels remade from: SMB 1-1, 1-2, and 1-4 SMB3 1-1 and 1-5 (looks like there might be some Mario Bros inspired in there as well) www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=501537
