I still have my issues, as well as merchandise (including ones ordered by the catalogs it came with). Nintendo Power in my opinion was like the Internet before the actual Internet. I miss the good times with my subscription.
Perhaps the first issue I read had Star Fox on its front cover, but never bought it. The first one I bought had DooM 64 on it. When I first subscribed to Nintendo Power, my mother suggested me to send an offer that allows me to subscribe and receive a free Super Mario 64 Original Soundtrack. My first issue after subscribing had Yoshi's Story on it, but my last had Star Wars: Rebel Strike.
AVGN: "Any subscriber to Nintendo Power KNOWS who Nester is."
Not really, I never knew who Nester was until either I heard online his name in Nintendo cartoon history, or heard him in an anniversary issue.
Speaking of Nester, this current status of Nintendo Power makes me wish that a tribute M.U.G.E.N version of him was created. I would like for him to be faithful to his origin, as well as featuring references to his Funky Bowling and PilotWings 64 roles with voice samples and sound effects ripped from the games. His Desperation Move and K. O. cries would be his "Yahoo!" and "AAAHHH!!!" cries from PilotWings 64.
Anyway, Jimmy Fallon mentioned Nintendo Power's current status on his Late Night show. He said "Nintendo Powers going out of business, when actually, they're just hitting pause until after their parents go to bed...."

From what I hear, the reason for NP's "demise" isn't sales, or anything, (in fact, I heard a few years back that NP is one of THE MOST successful gaming publications in America) it's due to NOA (Nintendo of America) deciding not to renew the comics' license to FutureUS. (The magazine's publisher for the last 6 years. Originally, NP was published by NOA, but now FutureUS handles it.) NOA won't release any reason why. As a subscriber sense 1997, (I even have a few issues before that, and the Player's Guides they used to make) I have to say I'm quite heartbroken to hear they're ending it. (Especially, when it's so close to reaching 300 issues.) Also, Nester was awesome. I wish NP would've made a compilation book of their old Nester comics, as well as the Super Mario Adventures, Zelda, Star Fox SNES, and Super Metroid comics to. (The Sonic comic compilations that Archie comics makes sell quite well, I hear.)

Nintendo Power was also supporting retail stores with their preview displays known as "Nintendo Power Previews". This was even one of the origins of the infamous Mario Head (or "Real Time Mario"):

Absolutely brilliant, and very bittersweet.
Been on the lookout for this at the magazine racks. Hope I'm able to snag a copy.
