^ Yeah, I'm inclined to give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt. Like I said, it would be uncharacteristic of them to simply do the exact same thing other companies are doing just because it's really popular. But who knows.

I'm putting my money on these figurines allowing you to send over SSB3DS data to the WiiU version. Whatever that data may be. The Smash Direct was still so mysterious about it as they would 'reveal more details at a later date.'
Atleast we'll have a good variety of Nintendo figurines then too, instead of just Mario Mario Mario Mario Mario Zelda Zelda Mario Mario

I thought it would be unlikely that smash bros gets NFC functionality and then this happens . . . This is some strange news, that might be better off as a rumor. The managing director from Nintendo of France says that NFC tech will be used for the Wii U version of Smash Bros. (translated from French) Wii U had suffered the past a lack of games a year, with widely spaced outlets. The beginning of the year 2014 was also quiet, what will happen after the release of Mario Kart 8? Many games release will be formalized at the show at E3, but you already know that we out action game Bayonnetta 2. By the end of the year, there will also be the new Skylanders, the new Disney Infinity, Sonic Boom, Watch Dogs or Zelda Hyrule Warriors. And on the output side of games produced by Nintendo, there will obviously be the fighting game Super Smash Bros.. E3 is also an opportunity to show the use of NFC technology [used in Skylanders and Disney Infinity, allowing the use of real objects - here, figurines - in video games] in Nintendo consoles . The NFC will be used in the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. But then Nintendo UK issued this statement . . . On 8th May 2014, Mr Iwata announced the decision for Nintendo to release character figurines with built-in NFC functionality that are compatible with video games starting from this year-end sales season.
There has, however, not been any specific announcements regarding which software titles for Nintendo platforms will use this functionality.
We have no other announcements to make at this time.

So now that Amiibo's have been revealed . . . . . . Anyone here interested in buying them? The design and detail on some of then looks very nice, and most of them look like they would be worth buying for display/collecting purposes as well.

Oh yeah, those things look awesome.
But I might end up just buying some cheap Chinese knockoffs. They look pricey.

I'll wait to see what else they can do... Spending my money on a glorified Assist Trophy isn't really tickling my fancy.

My feelings about them haven't changed too much. It's nice that they work with multiple games, so there's a little more value to them, and it doesn't sound like they'll ever be required for any particular game, so I won't feel like I'm missing anything big if I don't use them.
I could maybe see myself picking up one or two for my favorite characters, but I certainly wouldn't want to spend a lot of money collecting them just to have a full set.

At least they're completely optional and not required to do anything in the game. But what really piques my curiosity is how it will work for other games like Mario Kart 8.

I'll likely be getting most of them, for the same reason I got most of the Disney Infinity figures. Because I'm always looking for nicely-made figures of characters I like to decorate my workspace with. I doubt I'll use them much in game, though.

Yeah I'll end up buying a few of my favorite characters. The Smash Bros functionality is pretty lackluster, but it's a good way to get some detailed Nintendo figurines for rather cheap. Probably the only time the likes of Iceclimbers and G&W will get one too.
