So, I've decided to get a little more into the video game collecting scene. After I bought the Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Collector's Edition off the Square-Enix Store and saw that the price went up 200% after they sold out, I took a look at the value of all my other games. I also found some cool ways to store your games as well! For instance, N64, NES, and SNES games can be put in a universal game case with a glossed cover fit over it so dust is kept out and you can also have the game look nice on a shelf. Here's the site where you can buy some cheap cases, unfortunately the shipping costs are ridiculous. I might save on doing all that until later on down the line. In the meantime, I've been working on my GBA collection. The last few generations of games (PS2, Gamecube, Wii) are at that nice middle ground where you can tell which games will be worth quite a bit down the line and you can still get them at a fair enough price. You're pretty much screwed now if you're looking for a good deal on PS1 or N64 games. You can also find cheap cases for disc-based games if you find one without a case. Then you can print your own cover from www.thecoverproject.net/ or go to Staples or something and have them do it for you. How are your guys' collections? Like I said, I'm working on GBA now. I've been getting some deals at www.reddit.com/r/GameSell/It's a little hard to trust people this way, but I'm hoping I don't get let down because I sure could use Fire Emblem... |

Nobody? Lame. I've already built up a huge GBA collection now. Also received my first (technically second since I got the first one when I was a kid) bootleg game from Ebay! It was Minish Cap and it looked pretty damn good. At a first glance. There were a few things off though. I have a legit copy coming in the mail so I'll post comparison pics when it gets here.

I don't really consider myself a collector. If I am, it's only in the sense that I tend to keep the stuff I buy. So, I still have a lot of the games I had when I was young. The copy of NES Legend of Zelda that's in my closet right now is the same one I bought in 1988 after doing a ton of extra chores and saving up my allowance. But I don't usually buy games just for the sake of collecting.

I used to be on the hunt for old NES and SNES games a few years back. Partly for collecting, tho with the intent of just playing them.
Started with rebuying the games I sold as a kid (had to get that Mariokart 64), then continued to buy those I found interesting or the games that were also on this 370 in 1 NES cartridge I had as a kid that also happened to be released in EU/US (the cart had a ton of Japan only games I later discovered). I also bought two Famicoms (with a bunch of cartridges) and a disk system with the intent of collecting said Japan games. But hooking that thing up is a bitch, the joysticks are crummy (non-replaceable) and the sound doesn't work half of the time. Also the Disk System's unresponsive. Next to that, the games I wanted were hella expensive and in the end I hardly bothered actually hooking the needded system up to play the games. So I stopped bothering.
I still buy cartridges whenever I come across some for cheap in a flea market or whatever (which hardly happens anyway), but no more Ebay shenanigans. Apparently I got some rare stuff in the end tho, some I didn't even remember buying, ha. Some of them are worth a lot more now that I'm checking on Ebay, but I won't be swayed into selling so easily. Not anymore!

I also only collect games I enjoy or know I'll enjoy. I get games that I've played a shitton on emulators. My GBA collection is now at 60 games! Also, as promised, here is my finding of a decent looking Minish Cap bootleg.  Here are the games covers. Every real GBA game has, of course, the holographic Nintendo seal of quality, which both do. They also have a couple numbers imprinted on the label (something like E0 GG) which both do. This counterfeiter really wanted to pass this game off as real. However, you'll notice that the ESRB rating is very dark on the left game. So dark it can barely be read. The label also looks faded compared to the real game, but this is something I only noticed having them both side by side. The case itself also doesn't have that shimmer effect that most GBA games have.  Now for the insides. This is where things get iffy. Let's start with the top casing. Every real GBA game has the strange rectangle shape embossed inside it. They also don't have that weird circle sticking out. The screws in GBA games are also much longer than the one in the bootleg. Most fake GBA games also have a battery inside to hold the sram states and I think the rom itself. The fake hides this by using a glob chip, which is the black circle of gunk. There's also a lot of stray glue on the actual chip, which looks like it was put together badly. Finally, the copyright info. The real copyright on the Minish Cap's board is supposed to read 2001 Nintendo but the fake says 2002 Nintendo. Other games will have other years, but Minish Cap is supposed to read 2001. |

I think I'm going to use this thread as a way to bring attention to some rare an awesome games some of you guys may've never heard of. There are three ways a game can become valuable. 1: It's popular. Games in this category are not rare at all, but people tend to crank up the value as the years go by because more people want to play them who maybe never got the chance to. Examples include Final Fantasy VII, Super Smash Bros, and Twilight Princess for the Gamecube2: It was a good game that released at the end of a console's lifetime. These games were looked down on when they released because the new, shiny console was already out with it's new, shiny games. Later on people discovered some gems that released at an unfortunate timeframe. These tend to be worth MUCH more than the previous games. Examples include Earthbound, Conker's Bad Fur Day, and Shantae. 3: It had a limited release. These games aren't necessarily good, but they can be worth a TON of money due to their obscurity. I personally have no interest in tracking these games down, but if I see one at a fair price, I won't think twice in picking it up. Examples include NCAA College Basketball 2K3, Cheetahmen II, and Clay Fighter Sculptor's Cut. So, I'm going to use these categories to define the games that I'll talk about (type 1, 2, or 3 rarity). First up is Resident Evil Gaiden for the Game Boy Color. The game itself sells to at most $50. I managed to snag my copy for $20 which is a great deal because this was a pretty good game.  REG was released in PAL regions first in December 2001, then in Japan March of 2002, and finally in America June of 2002. Of course, by this time the GBA was already out. Because of this, the game gets a Type 2 rarity. The graphics look really nice given that it's a GBC game and the controls are flawless. While reviews were generally unfavorable at release, fans have still enjoyed it to this day. If any of you guys are interested in a less horror themed Resident Evil game for on the go, then I recommend picking it up now before the price gets even higher. |

Do you also collect games that were only released in Japan? In some cases those can be cheaper than US-released games.

I'll get a game CiB if the opportunity comes up, but it's not important. I'm not willing to spend the cash on an old unopened game, though. I do like owning the manuals because I enjoy reading them as well. Owning a Japanese game defeats this purpose. Unfortunately, games we consider rare over here are in abundance in Japan, Klonoa enters the $150 range used over here, but is around $20 over there. |

But you're right, $25 is an amazing deal for a CiB Pokemon Gold. Considering next to it on the shelf were loose carts of Pokemon Emerald with shitty labels being sold for $30. |

In case you guys don't already own them and would like to play them, Ocarina of Time 3D, Star Fox 64 3D, Kid Icarus Uprising, and Pikmin 3 among others have been discontinued. Their prices are skyrocketing ESPECIALLY OoT.
